In the west.

Back in the 18th century Voltaire said "We look to Scotland for all our ideas of civilisation".

If he was alive today he would have said "We look to Scotland for Olympic medals".

"Chris hoy

Andy Murray

Katie Archibald "

I was thinking about the Winter Olympics. But that is a fair point.

Only four years out of 5 and even then we are spoiled with one full day of summer.

Aylesbury

Voltaire was a bit of an oddball anyway. He probably only said that because he was french and reminiscent of the "Auld Alliance". The french establishment couldnt stand him so he was exiled to Britain, where he spent most of his days. He wasn't too keen on london I believe.

He wasn't too keen on us either in actual fact! He was getting a dig in when he said this (this wasn't actually even what he said but it's grown into this quote). Imagine him rolling his eyes and whining 'oh look at Scotland, it thinks its soooo cool' - that's more what he was going for . I like that we just claimed it as a compliment anyway though, I imagine that'd really piss him off .

There are a few points in your statement that would make him an ideal Scotsman!

But when you think about it Scotland has helped civilisation.

Penicillin

The world's 1st Co-op

Pneumatic tyre

Whisky

The Bank of England!

The Glasgow Coma Scale.
