Hey all

Rough start to this year. Being self employed has been terrible this year so far.

Can anyone suggest any ways of making some money. I have no qualifications and not a trade.

Been working for myself for a number of years.

Funny suggestions welcome too

I'm sorry to hear of your plight. It is tough out there. The service sector is open again. Many seem to be searching for staff.

Think the origin peel one originally came from tick tok

Donut media do a show on bs car life hacks and so how meny views the video has then tests them out

Not seen the original just seen it in a segment on donut media lol

But definitely good ones

What about care? It's hard work but they're in need of people right now, I'm not sure what qualifications you'd need if any.

What have you been doing the last 20 years, you probably have skills / experience you don’t see yourself as valuable but probably needs a bit of planning and training for the next 20. Remember to sharpen the saw regularly

Cheers for suggestions so far.

I can’t even think of something that no one else is doing right now.

If only it paid to jerk off lol

It all just really bad timing at the moment.

What’s the saying? It doesn’t rain, it pours……..something like that anyways

Gardener. With the conditions, not even regulars want me as they pause until March.

I should really have a holding fee to see me through winter as right now, ready to fold and find a new job.

I know domiciliary carers don't need qualifications, they're always desperate, especially for drivers was probably my favourite job I've had!

It's tough out there o/p. Never too late to learn a trade though. Get your name out there and undercut everyone where possible once you've got accredited. Lots of posts on social media groups asking for tradespeople. Plumbing/heating,decorating and garage work seem to be popular. You might not make much money to begin with but it's important to get a 'foot in the door' first.

Fences will need fixing yes. I do sometimes help another company out doing labouring when they are having to fix fences. Digging the old boulders out in wet mud is messy work lol

That's sad to hear OP.

I'd encourage you to list all the skills that you have and then select any that you are happy to use and could be marketed easily, even if just amongst people you know.

Gardening, lawn mowing, tidyi g, ocar washing, odd jobs and things like that are frequently things that people don't have much time for or enjoy doing as much as others.

If you can make things to sell, that's good too.

Sometimes leaflets through doors are enough to get a new connection and some 1 off jobs could turn into repeat bookings.

It's best to spread word by the people who you know, as they can vouch for you and will know others. You could print off some contact slips for them to hand over.

What about getting a part time job such as bar work of setting up a handyman business in your spare time.

My regular customers often ask me if I do decorating or anything other than gardening for the winter and I always say yes just call me and we can sort something.

Like most people, they end up watching the pennies over Christmas and forget about their offers of other jobs.

Even considered being an Uber driver but van insurance won’t cover that service.

I am grateful for all suggestions received so far.

All very kind words.

I get that the cost of living has gone up and that has affected work also but people gotta realise that it affects us self employed folk too.

Might have to sell my body……,there’s enough of it lol

Hmm...as we sping into spring how about jetwashing drives /patios /paths to supplement your gardening jobs

Perhaps driving jobs.. If you already have a van license i wonder if you could upgrade it to drive a lorry... But of course that may entail overnight stays depending on your circumstances

How about a train driver.. I think they get £40k starting salary? Would need to retraining, but could be worth a look?

If you have any holiday parks in your vicinity they'll be recruiting now (at the company I work for is as are all the others local to me). Some may be seasonal others full time, grounds workers often required especially if experienced

Hi

Sorry to hear about your problems and I hope you find a solution soon.

Have you tried looking at task website like Task Rabbit, Air Tasker etc.

You list yourself on there based on the tasks you can do and people will reply based in location.

I've known a couple of people that have used it to find work in web development, however there's also removals, gardening, cleaning, handyman, painter, pet care, furniture assembly etc.

I hope this helps & good luck.

Sounds like you don't need a whole new career, just something to get you through the lean months, is that right? Or maybe you feel ready for a change?

Possibly a part time retail job, til the spring/summer?

Hardly glamorous but some places offer a tenner an hour, more for nights...

Yeah something to get through the tougher winter months but have been considering a change now as I have back problems from heavy lifting and the mower is a dead weight to lift at least 10 times a day

Get a foam roller and learn how to self treat, 30 seconds a day is all you need.

Hospitality is now the busiest it has been since pre covid (eat out to help out not withstanding). Try local pubs, restaurants etc. It is 99 percent of the time minimum wage, but the hours are there to pick up if you are polite, friendly, work hard and are customer focused

Tik-Tok.

Find a niche and put a twist on it.

I know of a person who does cleaning videos. You only ever see their hands.

But they clean their house during the video and make a montage.

The twist is, they do something else during the video, which people apparently like. I've not going to give what they do away, but it's complimentary.

Let's pretend it's something like singing. Or reciting Klingon Love Poetry. Or reciting Pi.

It's enough to get them a lot of hits, and who knows, monetisation may be on the cards if they keep it up.

my trade is very seasonal i work in motor racing, and am a contractor so no work over winter, i do decorating to fill in the bad months, if you do a good job word of mouth soon spreads, to the point that when the race season starts i have to put people off, two very different trades, but if you can decorate your own house , and lets face it in your own house you tend to be supper critical of your work so do a good job, then you can do it for others
