It’s subjective. One person’s banter can be another person’s bullying

I enjoy good banter with someone I can match and who I know understands my humour. Like today when I had three chocolate biscuits and told Mr N I would turn into a spotty minger and he replied "instead of just a minger"

I love a bit of banter but unfortunately people are so easily offended these days that banter has to really be tamed down. I know I think before I speak a lot more, especially with some people and in certain places, here being one of them.

In the west.

I think it helps if the person you are having the banter with is someone you know really well. Not everyone understands the other person's sense of humour and that can lead arguements and violence, when alcohol is being consumed.

Definitely. True banter needs to be unbridled and creative and you don’t need to be worrying about causing offence. Old friends, siblings and other family members and partners are best for banter I think.

Agree.

What annoys we most though is a person who is present but not one of the two people having banter going into ‘You can’t say that to people’ mode.

I have to agree with you. It definitely doesn't go down well always with folks you don't know well.

You have to know your audience. Deliberately being hurtful or offensive and expecting other people to accept it because you think it's "just banter" isn't funny

When you meet someone that has the same sort of humour and you just bounce off each other.. Then that's great.

I'd like to think I do... I will take a hint..but have had an ongoing conversation with a gent who insists on using a term that really annoys me... apart from which he's lovely... its now no longer banter, just irritating

Exactly, I've spent most of ma working life on building sites, and we always had a good laugh, but it's nice when people know where to draw the line

I've seen it too often among men to say really hurtful things to each other under the guise of "bants" and as a way to accuse people of lacking a sense of humour because they're hurt or offended by someone's "jokes".

Banter is reciprocal, if it’s not reciprocal it’s not banter.

Agreed. It's why I always take my time getting to know people before fully opening up and fully having banter with them. It's so that I know which buttons to press with which person so it can remain light hearted. Being able to take it is also a big part of it too

There are a lot of good points made on this thread, but there are quite a few people on this site who don't know, or don't care about the boundaries.

Banter is great, when it's two evenly matched characters, but when one sides' mates weigh in, and some of the language gets on the strong side, it's no longer fun, nor funny.

Don't look so much for this in the lounge, look in the sideshows, where the big fish in small ponds lurk.

North West

Banter works much better with the full 360° experience of an in-person conversation. It doesn't work so well in the stark written word. Tone of voice, body language etc all add to the sentiment behind the words.
