This. I will check that any ladder I'm about to walk under is secure and hasn't got someone on it who may drop something on me.

Having said that, I sometimes irritate myself by touching wood

I’m not in any way superstitious myself but there is a certain logic to at least some of them whilst the intrinsic origins of others prove to be highly fascinating reading at any rate.

As regards the former at least though, don’t walk under a ladder - as a workman might inadvertently drop tools etc down onto you.

Do not cross on the stairs is again, presumably born for safety’s sake (so as not to knock the other person or oneself down them) etc etc.

Not walking over the triple manhole covers.

Lucky pants for big sports events (the luck needs renewing).

When I played rugby I always used to put my right sleeve, sock, boot etc on first. The last time I know for a fact I did the left I broke my ribs.

New shoes don't go on tables and umbrellas don't get put up indoors.

If you buy someone a purse/wallet, put a coin in it.

A few. Never walk under a ladder although that's more a safety thing same as crossing on the stairs. Always touch wood for luck, don't put new shoes on the table, no umbrellas open in the house, silver coin in a new purse, don't keep the pram in the house before the baby is born.

Touching wood for fortuity is an interesting one ostensibly based in folklore.

One theory as regards it’s inception was that it was believed that spirits lived inside trees and that knocking upon them would prompt the spirits to grant the knockers accompanying wish.

Another conflicting variation however, cites that the knocking on the tree was to actively muffle the utterance of the persons wish so as to prevent evil spirits in the tree from hearing it and subsequently thwarting the intended desire.

It’s rather fascinating stuff
