Pictures sent to my work

Hi, any advice welcome for this one…

I’ve got a few intimate pictures of myself (f) online and these have been hunted out and sent anonymously to my place of work. Made for a very awkward talk with HR. Have I got any recourse for this? Is it illegal or is it the risk of having these sorts of things online?

Yes, it’s illegal for someone to have done this.

Contact the police to have it investigated.

I believe this would fall under revenge porn legislation! So definitely contact the police.

Sorry to hear that happened to you, OP. My piece of advice (as you already got great advice above)- make sure your profile cannot be found using search engines. At least then you'll know it's a fellow Fabber that did it.

Just to address a couple of comments!

I’m not sure if it falls under revenge porn specifically as it wasn’t sent to someone and is technically available for anyone to find if they look hard enough.

It wasn’t from fab as our profile hasn’t been active for a little while and the picture was never uploaded here.

I’ll get in touch with the police then, thank you all for your advice x

What is wrong with people. How dare they do that to you. What a flake. I am sure I speak for the majority ( I hope), they should shot against a wall. I would report to police and lay it on, how it has effected you, to bring the max to their actions.

I hope that there isn't anything that cant be resolved at work.

Well your works HR department is a bit shit tbf OP, as they should have supported you with advice and counsel to get the Police involved with what is clearly a malicious, and illegal, act.

As others have said, go straight to the Police, trust me they will have seen a lot worse, and don’t let it get you down. You are the victim here.

HR should discipline them for sending the pics on their computer/server.

IANAL but I'm pretty sure sending pictures with the intent to cause distress or harm is illegal under the electronic communications laws, it does not matter whether sent to an individual or and organisation.

Defo involve the police.

I'd read your employment contract.

Pretty sure most don't say anything about putting pictures of yourself on the Internet, I mean Instagram and all the risky photos there...?

There might be something along the lines of behaviour considered to be detrimental to the reputation of the business...but that's unlikely.

Still worth reading it just in case.

That's a really shitty thing for someone to do, if they were sent by email then it's easy to find out where they were sent from

In the west.

Your HR dept should be advising you about this. The images were sent to your workplace therefore your employer is involved but they also have a duty of care to you.

I think they should have informed you then carried out an investigation to see where they came from as it could be someone internal.

Pure scum. Go to the police. People need to realise this site and your private/professional life is different. I would say they are childish but this is far more serious. I also agree this is revenge porn and recently custodial sentences have been handed out.

The person at work is now a victim for seeing them, so that's at least two crimes, in my book.

Hope this gets sorted for you very quickly.

It's not revenge porn unless you sent the pictures to a partner who then distributed them. But it's an offence of malicious communications since they were clearly sent with the intention to embarrass you.

And as someone else has said, HR have no role in this unless you can be identified from the photos as working for the company.

Hopefully that will narrow down who you think it was. Good luck.

I really hope HR are supporting you with this. The police should take this seriously, has there been any other kind of harassment/threats?

I had someone threaten me for years to do something similar, long before revenge porn was a thing and illegal.

This is why I never take explicit photos.
