Yes we don't celebrate, I don't understand why I have to show love one day a year, I'd rather treat the Mr often and when I want, there's more thought in that, not because I'm supposed to for a set date.

We celebrate Christmas with the kids, however gift wise no we don't bother for each other and yes buy when we want to

So just because you're alone, people in love shouldn't celebrate? It actually is meant to be a day when a secret admirer sent an anonymous card to the object of their love, but like most other days, it's got transformed into what consumers prefer. I'm alone too, but remember the thrill of getting Valentines treats in past relationships and did appreciate the gestures, as well as showing mine.

The same sort of thing could be said for mother's/father's Day and Christmas. Celebrations remind you of what you don't have.......if you let them! I haven't celebrated Christmas, valentine's or any other public holiday since my 20s when I realised that you can be nice to people whenever you want!

I don't be grudge other people celebrating as it's always good to see people feeling great, being spoilt and remembering how lucky they are.

Chin up, make a point of being positive with all the people you see celebrating today and you'll be surprised how good it makes you feel.

Then go home and have a wank, by yourself, with no interruptions. Bliss

Exactly this. We get stuff for the kids but we don't buy each other anything for Christmas. All the celebration days have just become a marketing wet dream.

We see no reason to buy over-priced tat to declare our love. I saw this described as being sanctimonious on another comment. Maybe it is but what it feels like is a desire not to cheapen how we feel by using empty clichés to prove it exists. Her ladyship standing by a road in the middle of the Yorkshire Dale's at 2am just to give me a hug and a kiss as I run past on a race means far more to me than a balloon heart

Everybody feels different about this sort of thing. There are lots of different days people celebrate, or not. Each to their own. If it makes you happy, do it. If it's not for you, just wish everyone else all the best. I will never begrudge someone celebrating something like a special day that makes them happy, whether it's for me or not. Have a lovely day, whatever today means to you.

I kinda liked the thought of people sending out cards to someone they are enamoured with…..

….and then for the first time ever I received two cards last year, never found who they were from so it ended up being a bit pointless.

As for the over-commercialisation, with balloons, and presents etc. not for me, but to each their own.

I don't mind it. I show my love to Mr often that I don't need a set date to remind me to do it. I do enjoy the fact it's a day where we can ask others to watch the kids so we can spend time together but we don't buy cards, gifts etc.

Same. It's like saying you don't celebrate Easter because you can eat chocolate any day of the year . If people don't like celebrating Valentine's Day then obviously don't celebrate it but I don't understand the need to shit on people who do. I don't think Valentine's is worth getting stressed over trying to make it "special" or worth spending more than you can afford or anything but I don't see the harm in doing however much or little makes people happy. I personally hate going out to do anything for Valentine's because it's so busy and overpriced but I do like making an effort for a nice night in and swapping small tokens of appreciation. We're doing fondue and my gift is a book. Other people prefer to do stuff together over buying gifts and that's great if that works for them.
