Is your central heating and boiler on a service contract? Do you have insurance for your household appliances? Is it worth having one? I have but the cost keeps going up and up and considering cancelling. Is switching a good option. I did some comparisons and I can get central heating and boiler cover at half the price I am paying but then read the reviews and can be a bit scary as I have had reasonably good service to date. Any thoughts, recs?

We have a service contract that covers the heating, plumbing and (I think) electrics. I don't every year and ask them if they can reduce the renewal price, they always do and frequently give me a cheaper price for the same cover than we're already paying. I do that with all our insurances along with getting quotes elsewhere.

We have found it very useful and cost effective

Thanks, I am planning to ring mine tomorrow hoping they will trim it down so I can stay with them. Yes, I try to do that with phone contract. I always get a good deal and have stayed with same one for over 20 years now

If the person on the phone does not automatically give you a discount then tell them to cancel it.

They don’t ever seem to take notice of time with them I have found with most that once you say that to them they change really quickly

But then I’m so tight I haggle in charity shops

Instead of ringing a company for a contract discount. Just cancelled a contract to get the best call back and discount. At least you'll know if they value your custom.

Doesn't everyone? Well, not sure I haggled in a charity shop but I am definitely a haggler. Too many trips to the markets on holiday have taught me a thing or two. You should see how much I saved on my last car. I wore out the poor guy, I tell you

It's peace of mind more than anything. Our house was an executors sale, the vendors were not in agreement or happy about the price they'd agreed to sell it to us for. They expressed their discontent by leaving a very unpleasant memento on the bathroom floor, damaging a hot water pipe and turning the water off so we didn't find out until we moved in and turned it on. Having a service contract meant we only needed to make one call and it was sorted.

No, I only haggle when the margi s are large. To be honest, many years ago I haggled at John Lewis's and it worked at the time.

I am fortunate that I am capable, practical, well trained and experienced. Generally, anything that needs fixing, replacing or servicing in this house I do myself. I’m not paying for an insurance company’s profits so that they can send someone round to do stuff I can do myself; generally to a higher standard, quicker and with my priorities to the fore rather than cutting corners for an “early shoot”. We got £3K off this house when we bought it, because the boiler died six days before completion and that’s what the seller’s were told it was going to cost to replace it. An hour’s research online, £100 plus post for a new PCB, and ten minutes to fit it. It’s run without fault for a decade since.

Add up the cost of the premiums over a decade and I would wager that you could pretty much replace anything that broke in that time.

I was once told some sensible advice,which does make sense.

The money you would pay for cover,put this aside as a whole year it would be a waste if you have paid to say insurance but didn't need to.make sure you only keep it for this not something that you would dip into because you know that you have it.youll end up saving money. Martin Lewis even suggested this as well.

Yes I do. I am not naive not to know they still made a good profit but I also paid a better price than I would have done and that's a fact.

Also do it regarding appliances it helps and saves money should you ever need to repair.given way government has been talking about customers being able to buy parts directly from manufacturers which cuts cost rather than so much of these appliances getting thrown away that only have minimum repair. but it would be cheaper like cutting out the middle person or company

That's my worry, not as a landlord but as knowing I can get speedily response if there is an issue. Some comparable but cheaper service contract done have particularly good reviews. I suppose one might say you get what you pay for but still the price difference is too much and tbh the provider I am with doesn't have particularly brilliant reviews but I never had any issues personally for all these years.
