Great White Shark

A "great white shark" is thought to have been spotted lurking off the coast of Britain - just yards from a popular tourist beach.

An experienced shark fisherman said the creature seen near the beach at Goring-by-Sea in West Sussex was "obviously a shark" and it could be a "small, immature great white" searching for food.

Wouldn't surprise me. Remember watching a documentary a few years back when they were looking for evidence of Great Whites in UK waters. One thing they said was that given the seal population, water temperatures etc it was surprising they weren't here, though possibly Orcas scare them off.

I have been studying this closely. There are some credible sightings although until one of these buggers has been landed then we will know for certain. My belief is that it is only a matter of time. I subscribe to a free you tube channel which investigates sightings in British waters.

Mark my words.. they are coming ..

I used to live in Portsmouth, we'd often see sharks close to the shore line, near the harbour entrance.

Not great whites obvs......

Oh and great whites are not new to our shores, bearing in mind that we are the receiving end of the atlantic oceans biggest warm water current, which warms the UK to much higher temperatures than places on the same latitudes, ie Moscow.

It did turn out to be a sewage outlet pipe at low tide that was spotted, not a shark.

Not unheard of, it is a thought that they breed in the Med, around Sicily, and have been caught up in fishing nets around there...

It's a bit early in the year for the usual "is this a great white?" when it's obviously a asking shark.

The "fin" in this story is the end of a drainage outfall, which is well known to locals.

Used to see quite a few of them in the North Sea when I was offshore. Good news is there are no reports of them ever attacking people in the wild. Quite a few have attacked trainers in seaquariums. See the documentary Blackfish.

I'm the same. I find most sea creatures fascinating and graceful. To see great whites in the ocean is on my bucket list, but I think I'll stick to a cage. I have seen some snorkeling with whites, I think you really need to be able to read their behaviour to know when that's safe to do.

It is possible to swim with great whites but again, lots of factors go with it before anyone takes on that. I would love to do so but think I would leave the swimming in open waters with great whites to the experts and I'll stick to being in a cage. Would still count towards my bucketlist too that would. One of my favourite animals they are

Diving off the south coast of Malta and there's a famous (infamous) landing of a GW shark in a fishermsns nets. It burnt the engine out and they had to be towed ask the way to Valetta harbour where there was a crane big enough to land it !

16 foot long the bugger was !

Apparently the Med is a birthing ground for them
