Lost of a pet

I haven't created many posts on here but struggling to say aloud the struggle I'm having since losing our beloved 15 year old dog on Tuesday. Feel I need to be strong but where inside I want to crumble.

She was my first baby, before the kids, my first proper responsibility. We had so many adventures and good times together. I know she was a good age and she'd had a good life but this ache in my chest is unreal.

Probably not the right place to vent but needed just to get it out.

Your allowed to grieve, she was your friend for 15 years. Don't bottle it up, bawl if you need to. Grief is grief no matter what. You know things will ease and you'll have many happy times to look back on but in the mean time she's left a big dog shaped void in your life. Big hugs x

Sorry for your loss, pets quite easily become part of the family, must admit I was gutted when I lost one of my tortoises

This is a poem by Pam Ayres. It kinda sums up the loss of a beloved pet.

Tippy Tappy Feet

The days are slowly passing since I found her still and prone

since I took her to the surgery and came back on my own

now as my key turns in the lock the sound I miss most of all

are the tippy tappy toe nails as they skidded down the hall

There was something in the welcome there was in her style

in the jingle of her collar and ecstatic doggy smile

the tail that wagged so furious the eyes that shone so bright

and the silence - it’s the silence - it is blacker than the night

Her things are still around me

I have left them all alone

a little greasy collar a yellow rubber bone

a hairy tartan blanket her basket on the floor

from which she sprang to terrify all knockers at the door

How grievous is the emptiness on entering the hall

how disproportionate so great a loss for one so very small

for the music it is missing and my home is incomplete

the music of her tippy tappy doggy dancing feet

My heartfelt condolences for your loss.

Don't downplay the sense of loss because she was 'only a dog'. She was a beloved member of your family. She gave and received love in as meaningful a way as any others did. The void she has left and the pain you feel is as it should be for a loss this deep.

It’s ok to grieve.

My boy was 15 when I lost him, 2011.

It takes time to live with it, but you will.

A soul that spends that amount of time with you, giving unconditional love, is an important part of your life. Grieving is justified.

Remember the great times.

Never feel like you shouldn’t talk in any forum. So sorry for your loss. I had a dog when I was a little girl who I loved so much. My best friend. Broke my heart x

Oh Jenny..I'm so sorry to read this.

Pets are family and the loss after all those years is immense.

Allow yourself to grieve.

Better days will come..probably not much consolation right now.

Try and take some comfort that your baby was well looked after and loved and would have felt that and loved you back xx

Sorry to hear that OP It's not a pet, it's a part of your family, it will take a while to process it. Just take comfort knowing the wonderful home you gave them and what a difference you made to that dog's life. Love and hugs to you

So sorry for your loss x I felt like my heart had been ripped out when we lost ours, I couldn’t go to work for a week as couldn’t stop crying and couldn’t eat, he was my beautiful boy and our home felt empty without him, it’s 11 years on and I’ve still not been able to get another dog, the grief was to much to feel I could do it again, feel your pain Big hugs xx

Jenny , this is bringing tears to me.

I totally get it and it fucking hurts when this happens. No matter how old they are, we are never ready for it!

I lost one of my babies nov 20, and the other one 2 months ago. I still miss them so much and it hurts whenever I think of them x

Please take your time to heal, and know it’s totally okay to feel it x

(Whoever says they are just dogs or pets, they are dicks - they are our furry babies!!) xx

I am so sorry for your loss. I know what it feels like and the unbearable pain. You know that was much loved and cared for and had a good life and that will be some little comfort to you. All those lovely memories will stay with you forever whilst the pain will ease after you have the time to grief. My thoughts are with you.

As others have said they are family & you need to grieve properly,

It really does hurt like hell, lost my Jack Russell of 14 years just before Xmas, she went downhill so quickly, it was the first time I've said goodbye to a dog - I always thought that when the time came I'd be ok - I wasn't,

I know we are all grown ups, we know that all things being equal pets don't live as long us, & we know that life isn't fair - but it doesn't make any better!

My saving grace is that I have other dogs, so keeping to the pet routines helped to an extent....it would have been so much worse (for me) if the patter of paws & claws totally vanished,

My first one had a Tumor so I had 3-4 months of it (it was mentally exhausting with ups and down but I knew) the second. She was gone within a week of her being sick. And she wasn’t that old (only 10-11 for a small dog isn’t that old) so it ripped me completely..

God, this thread is gonna make me cry

Our job is to give them the best life possible and a good home.

It's never easy to say goodbye, but that's part of it too.

Just give yourself time. In a way you always miss them but it becomes less painful until its more fond memories you wish you could relive. I have lost two dogs. The first my parents had before me so I had never known life without her. I dealt with it better the second time as I was an adult but it was still hard, especially as I didn't get to say goodbye as I was at University at the time and it happened very quickly so there wasn't chance to travel back. I comforted myself by thinking about what a good life we gave her and that she was able to be put to sleep before she really began to suffer.
