Good Afternoon . I have noticed one or two of my workmates, when I make a cup of tea they always leave a bit in the bottom of the cup. When asked they said we have always done it. Is it common practice .

Not for me. I've just had a nice cuppa and finished the whole cup. Same with coffee, I empty my mug. Waste not, want not x

Probably goes back to when loose tea leaves were used. Gypsies who read the tea leaves like a drop of leave left so the leaves can be swirled a bit. Personally I think it’s nonsense. I had my palm read once and was told I’d marry a man who was tall dark and handsome….. still waiting to meet him….. met a few handsome ones but they were fair haired not dark. Lol

It never stays in the cup long enough to go cold when I've got one in front of me

It's to avoid accidentally drinking tea leaves, which you can get even with modern tea bags (e.g. if they're ripped, or if another bag in the pot was ripped and got leaves on it).

I didn't do it until I got a mouthful of them - now I do it

It’s probably a relic of their upbringing. My Nan (Gawd bless her soul) and Mum are the same, it’s from when tea leaves were used before tea bags and a few stray ones used to end up in the bottom of the cup.

My Mum still leaves a bit to this day even when using teabags

Yep same here

Nan and Grandad used to have fresh tea every morning. You dont drink the bottom bit because of the dregs of the leaves.

Mrs NE does this. She also has to leave a tiny bit of food on her plate when she’s finished eating. It really annoys me for some reason but I suppose if that’s the biggest problem in our marriage we’re doing alright.

Does it come from the days where tea bags would leak constantly or loose leaf tea was more common.

Nothing worse than a mouth full of leaf at the end....

Well except pubes I suppose....

Why is there pubes in your tea?

I always leave a bit. We had loose leaf growing up and a memory of mouthful of them lasts a lifetime. Ugh

I lived with some arsholes when I was training in my early 20's. Right lads. Not my cup of tea (see what I did there?)

There’s definitely a teabagging joke in there somewhere

Think it's where all the spiders and files live we call it the dregs, also biscuit crumbs and tea leaves lurk there.

East London

It stems from when we used to use tea leaves and there was some detritus at the bottom of the cup.
