"Never again will I have a main joint account Yes I will have one for bills and such and transfer direct debit in to it but never a main account As a when I did have one and me and the ex split she thought it be a good idear to go in to the bank and lift everything out the joint account for her self Left me flat broke with a ton off bills on my name and no way to pay it despite it not being her money She had all ready movied her pay in to another account We were living month to month at the time so no real savings But I still hadn’t got around to movie my wages out See seen fit to steal my wages and book a holiday to Ibiza with my wage " I had a joint account the moment my ex and I decided we were a couple. Yes, I earned more but we were a COUPLE so, never an issue for me until exactly this too. During our break up, she did exactly what she said she'd NEVER do and cleared the joint out leaving men broke and scrambling to pay debts. Found out later she had also been saving and syphoning money into a hidden account despite me doing without weekly /monthly essentials. So agreed, never again too. Lesson learnt.

" I was the same she only worked part time 16 hours a week didn’t bother me one bit I was being payed stupid money at a young age like £13 a hour and this was like back in 2007-2008 witch considering the cost off liveing back then we were living good but still month to month because she wanted the fancy stuff but only worked 16 hours a week didn’t bother me as long as I had her I was happy don’t know if she ever did anything like that though never cross my mind to think off that one but yes big lessons learned there

"We also have our own individual accounts too. When we were both working and earned slightly different salaries we used to split the money up so after all the joint bills and joint savings we ended up with the same amount of personal spend each, so I effectively paid a little bit more each month but we ended up equal. " That's a nice way of splitting it

We used split bills between two accounts and then send half of bills over so equal pays

"Not for me. I wouldn't mind a joint one for shared expenses but I prefer financial independence otherwise. I like to manage my own money and decide when I want to cut back and save and when I can afford to splurge and I wouldn't want someone else to have to live by that for my sake. " That’s exactly my feelings must be the fellow scouser side lol

"We've only ever had a joint account since long before we married (pretty much from when we moved in together). Always seems a bit weird to me that people in a marriage keep separate accounts. Over the years there's been periods when each of us has earned more than the other but all we've ever been bothered about is the final amount going in, not who gets to keep what. Obviously nobody can tell you what's right for your own situation though and maybe it's different for us in that neither of us had anything when we met."

He also transfers me all the bill money on payday so he can see exactly what he has left in his account to spend. If we just had a joint account, I don't think he would be able to keep track of whether he was spending his "fair share". Not through maliciousness, he just doesn't work it out the same way I do. He needs to see it clearly.

"I think joint accounts are great for joint bills but also having your own account and your own separate money is important. I’ve always been a fan of the idea of you each having a solo account that your wage gets paid into (assuming you both work), then each transferring an agreed amount into a joint account to cover all shared bills, also maybe a second joint savings account you both pay into for saving for holidays or whatever, and then you have whatever is left in your own account for your own stuff to spend or save as you feel like " People can have multiple accounts. Joint for bills, solo for wages, solo for savings, solo for spending money, joint for savings etc.

"I've been with my husband 16yrs we've never had a joint bank account it works for us But what works for one couple might not work for the next " The same (not with your husband obviously). No need for joint account.
