Privacy when your phone is going in for repair

I need to take my phone in to get repaired, they will need to be able to unlock my phone to test it's working, how can I be sure they won't look at my various websites, photos or bank account? Everything is is secured using the same numerical password which I will need to give them so they can test it.

I presume they will need me to leave the SIM in, (if it's as simple as removing the sim then great, but I have no idea if things like my bank account, photos and and access to sites like this are still available when the SIM is out).

I don't want to have to do a factory reset before I give it to them.

Any advice is welcome. Thank you

Firstly I would change your password to unlock the phone so it's different to all your other apps and log out of the apps you don't want them to go into

I'd be more worried about my camera roll

Hi Glitz,

Not sure if you have iPhone or not but couldn’t you clear your browser history and cookies for one?

You have banking apps I take it.. are these not password, thumb id, Face ID protected?

There are photo vault apps you can download which will then be password protected, but you would need to import them into this vault and delete from your galleries. Then export them back afterwards. Not sure if this messes up the date stamp of these pics…

Is it android or iOS

Download a app that allows you to set a password to get in to the apps

Set a different password for the apps to the phone

And then lock them out off anywhere you don’t want them to be

It’s not fool proof though can be got around

The only safest method would be backup and then wipe the phone clean and then re install the back up when you get it back

I understand the apprehension but I’m sure they will be professional about your phone and it’s content, probably come across so many times and are used to it.

Unless it’s illegal and then your probably fooked and need a new phone

It's an Android phone, I'm just playing around with it now and I think I can set a different lock screen password to the apps password so therefore they could use a pattern to open the lock screen but they would need a numerical code to access the apps, I'm just trying to work it out!

For Android there is definitely a "secret folder" function you can put yr photos in. As others have said, log out of banking etc and that should be safe but I'd freak if anyone saw all my photos!

Thank you I think this will work. And yes I am more worried about the camera roll!

(There is nothing illegal on my phone it's just a privacy issue.)

I had to take one in with a broken screen once so I didn't have chance to hide anything. Same with my laptop that wouldn't turn on. I feel like if you go somewhere decent they should be professional about it and won't deliberately go snooping. I'm sure it's pretty common for people to have potentially embarrassing content. I saw an article about a guy who was caught looking at a customers private photos and he was sacked over it.

I have a free app on my phone called "safe folder" for all my intimate photos and videos. It needs my finger print to open so others can't get in it.

Apart from that I'd just make sure everything is logged out and change the unlock password for your phone so it is different to everything else.

Thank you everyone for your input, I'm going to download app lock, put my photos in a vault and set a different lock screen password to my apps password, then they can unlock my phone but not access my apps. I will also clear my history and log out of everywhere.

Thank you everybody, I feel like I have a plan now and I'm much more secure about it!

Most finance apps are 2-factor anyway it’s the law now. You shouldn’t have dodgy photo unsecured on a phone , especially of other people! !

My son used to work as a phone and computer technician and your phone will be covered by data protection and GDPR. They have a duty of confidentiality to not disclose what they see unless it is illegal content...so your content should be safe. If in doubt ask them
