Norway is banning certain breeds of dog because of the perceived cruelty of pedigree breeding. The king Charles spaniel is one.

Is this breeding cruel?

It does seem to be for some breeds. I don't like breed snobbery although I'll admit I always liked King Charles Spaniels.

Yes, common sense tells you that

I believe they are beset with health issues. One of the reasons the Cavapoo rose in popularity (Cavalier King Charles Spaniel + poodle).

Travelling

Bulldogs have so many breathing problems, among other health issues. Females are unable to give birth naturally and require cesarean.

King Charles Spaniels have multiple health issues but one major issue is that their skulls have become too small and causes all kinds of neurological issues. Major pressure on the brain.

Predigree breeding is fine, the breeding for more and more defined appearance traits at the cost of the dogs health is the issue.

It's animal abuse, and has only been tolerated because it was a rich person's hobby.

Was it near the Cadbury’s factory in Bourneville?

"When I was a kid everyone had a mongrel..."

We never had a pure breed, but all my aunts and uncles did.

We were the poor relations

I don't even know where we got our dogs from.

All my dogs, except the two mongrels I have now, since getting married were donated from people who didn't want them, and all were pure breeds.

totally cruel, and anyone in disagreement is in the big ££ world of dog breeding.

Overbreading and fads within the breeders circles (high crowns on newfies, boxed snout on the Dogues, pugs snouts as well etc etc ) to name but a few recent ones, have left these dogs suffering, I rescued a Dogue brought in from France to bolster the breed here,(one could say a Prince within the breed considering what his parents won but once he matured he could hardly breathe and the breeders cut him loose, he was huge and stunning but suffered at his exaggerated normal weight, I got 11 years out of him at a reduced weight of aporox 58kg,, let that sink in, in his prime and when I got him he was over 70kg and could barely breath.

Also Crufts or more so the kennel club that run it tried witch hunt tactics on their Belgium counterparts a few years ago when they highlighted the issues of over breeding for cosmetic reasons, and tried to stop it.

So yea, anyone banning these breeds for a decade or so has my vote,, always was a fan of the scandis,

I would support a ban on breeding dogs with any kind of trait that renders it with lifelong health problems, yes. Bradycephalic breeds, ones with tiny skulls or deformed back legs etc. It's absolutely cruel and abhorrent to breed animals like that and it shouldn't be permitted. Well done to the Norwegians, although there's more than just these two breeds that need reform.

I agree with Ambassador. Too many Dogs are bred to look a certain way that just is not at all healthy for the poor poochie. People think that the Kennel Club is a good thing..they dictate what a Breed should look like and anything slightly off this is not the true breed..IE: I watched a documentary a while back... A women who breeds Rhodesian Ridge-backs culls any puppies that don't have the Ridge along their back, as that means they are not meeting breed standards as set by the Kennel Club so not worth as much money and they cannot breed with them. Its all wrong, German Shepherds having deformed Hips and spines as they have been bred to drop real low at the hips...not correct for the breed, all you have to do is look at pics' of breeds from years gone by and it's obvious what deformities humans have developed in Dogs. I grew up with a family Alsation as a pet, I then had a Jack Russel cross as my own pet...she lived a healthy life till she was 16 1/2 years. Lets just stop messing with canine genetics and stop breeding un healthy dogs.

I feel sorry for the overbred Pugs with the problems they have, although I hope the ones that already exist still get to be loved.

I've got a Jug I rehomed just over a year ago, he looks like a Pug when he looks straight at you, but he's actually got a decent snout and doesn't struggle with his breathing. I regularly take him on 4 - 6 mile walks and he's fine. He's an ace little sidekick

"And what about sausage dogs...

Is that cruel.. ?"

Modern sausage dogs are also deeply flawed and yes, it's cruel to breed them as such.

Compared to the Dachshund at the beginning of the 20th century, the modern animal:

"The Dachshund used to have functional legs and necks that made sense for their size. Backs and necks have gotten longer, chest jutted forward and legs have shrunk to such proportions that there is barely any clearance between the chest and floor. The dachschund has the highest risk of any breed for intervertebral disc disease which can result in paralysis; they are also prone to achondroplastic related pathologies, PRA and problems with their legs."

Check out the article entitled: 100 Years of Breed “Improvement”

Caen Elegans / 2012/09/29

which shows many types of dog next to images of the same breed at the beginning of the 20th century. It doesn't make for pleasant reading.

Crossing a Sausage with a Dog is taking genetic modification too far! Dolly the sheep would be turning in her grave.

I always wanted a bulldog. I researched them for the best breeder and came across many articles about their health issues. I couldn’t with good conscience get one. So I got a Dorset Old Tyme one as it was part of an effort to bring back a healthier version of the breed.

Apart from the odd skin complaint and mischief of his own making he was very healthy and gave me 13 long years of sheer happiness. I miss him dreadfully.

In short yes ban unhealthy breeding.

For the health of dogs breeding should be regulated. Owners vetted too.
