Has anyone mastered a language other than one using the familiar a-z alphabet such as Chinese or Arabic. If so how long did it take, how did you go about it and can you read/write/speak it fluently?

I speak Spanish and Japanese. Also am quite advanced with Korean

Japanese is quite easy with katakana and hiragana, although kanji is a bit trickier. Once you are used to the syllables, it's quite simple

That's impressive. Do you just have an interest in languages or did you learn them for a specific purpose?

Have son who has lived and worked in Moscow for the last three years after leaving Uni..started learning Russian at eleven at Grammar school..studied Russian at University..and only now says he is truly fluent..

If it's good enough for Funky -

HTML, CSS, Java, C++,C, C#, XML,Ruby and Perl.

Also Spanish, French and a little German

I speak Chinese and read a fair bit. No way could I have just learnt in a classroom. I lived there for 8 years and always wanted to chat and socialise. (I did have some lessons aswell in the first two years)

Learning to read started with menus and train timetables - hunger and travel are great motivators.

I started to learn Japanese when I was 10 because of karate, then practiced the alphabets. Once got used to those and the pronunciations, everything else fell into place. I could read and write it by the time was 14.

Same reason for Korean as have done taekwondo for the last 7 years, so old habits and all that.

As for Spanish, my ex was from Madrid, so was fluent in that within 2 years.

Once you learn 1 language, the methods become second nature and others become really easy to pick up.

I agree, also... if you have had the chance to learn Latin (even if only for a year or two) it will help so much learning foreign languages. I had to do Latin - no choice for 5 years and I actually enjoyed its logical structure. It helped me learn other European languages and derive many words and work out their meaning if I dont know them.
