"I post this thread every year if it can just help one person. World Mental Health Day raises public awareness about mental health issues. The day promotes open discussion of mental disorders, and investments in prevention, promotion and treatment services. This year the theme for the day is “Depression: A Global Crisis”. Depression affects more than 350 million people of all ages, in all communities, and is a significant contributor to the global burden of disease. Although there are known effective treatments for depression, access to treatment is a problem in most countries and in some countries fewer than 10% of those who need it receive such treatment. Many people suffer from all kinds of mental illness, over the years it is gradually losing its stigma, and people have accepted that its a big part of some peoples lives. Most of us know someone that suffers mebtak health and the affects the impact it has on their lives. As well as the people that suffer mental health, we much never forget the health professions, carers, famaily of those that suffer. One persons mental health can affect a whole group of people"

"Thanks to all of those that support us bonkers people. I know it isn't easy and the stuff we put you through tests all the love and care you have for us. Having that faith and love does eventually get through to us. There are very few people who have not had a bout of the blues. Even if you have only experienced this for a couple of hours do try and think what it would be like to feel that all the time, getting worse and worse and no sign of it ending. I can't remember who said it but Churchill's term, the black dog, works on so many levels. It is our companion, we may think it is our friend at times and sometimes it hounds us and makes life miserable. Be well." Well said... Like I said an inspiration and many peeps do hide it due to stigma... at some point we can go through bouts of depression or highs... Means we are all human and we know there is hope... The song mood indigo by Nina Simone comes to mind. Awareness and non judgemental attitude is key.. Ebony

"And in our local new reported another day care centre is to close. " Care centres cost a lot more than putting vulnerable people with foster people. Not always the best solution for the vulnerable person... but cheaper!

"I've been to a meeting today where more than half of the room should have known what today is and didn't. Now they may all think I am a little more bonkers than they thought I was because I gave them a lecture and told them to go off and read some information. " I used to do work in some of the stay in wards for mental health issues, my favourite thing was to ask the staff if they knew the difference between a mental health carer and client. Had all the usual answers such as qualifications, degrees etc and all I used to say was slippers. Only way you could tell half of them apart

Out here though the slippers aren't always in evidence.

" to all sufferers, it does get better x" Unfortunately it doesn't. My close friend has suffered depression of varying degrees for several years. He had been in and out of hospital for most of this year. He was discharged 6 weeks ago and was found dead on Sunday. After discharge there was no further professional support offered; he just couldn't face life. He had been a tormented soul and I can't help thinking he's in a better place now. I just wish he didn't have to suffer this horrendous illness at all or, at the very least, had received treatment earlier. Until we all, as a society, recognise, accept and fund mental health services sufficiently, many more people are going to feel as desperate as he did.

What a sad outcome even if your friend is now at peace. There will be relatives and friends how now suffer, wonder why.. and perhaps even feel guilty for not having done enough. I could not agree more with you one the role we all need to take to help deal with the problem. The enemy, ie the depression is so often invisible to outsiders.

I'm sorry you have lost a friend and in such a horrible way. Drugs work for some but not for others and the support systems are disappearing. Look after yourself and I hope your friend has found the peace he sought.

It a shame to say but mental health issues are usually last on the list when it comes to funding. Sorry for your loss, if it is of any comfort I was told a life is not over until every life it has touched is gone.

It means he'll be around for a long time yet; he was a very special man.

"It's all down hill now and more cut backs, cut backs, cutback s and more cutbacks.... " Believe me you can't possible believe how true this statement is. I have been there with a family member over the past few weeks...and whilst I've read on these threads that there is help out there...it is a total fallacy. She is begging out for help after a bad episode of her illness put her in hospital a couple of weeks back...was discharged with a referral (this keeps every thing to procedure) But has she had any one to help in any which way? Has she shite. It is totally broken and all they do is talk about how they will improve it whilst doing feck all to help those in the greatest need of help as every avenue leads to a dead end. So mate as you say it's getting worse I honestly think it is happening now and it can't get much worse as presently.
