Live without your car?

I'd be lost because I'm completely useless with public transport

Not really.

Public transport links in my area are garbage, cycling is a lottery because if the state of the roads/cycle paths don’t get ya, the city’s drivers will. Plus, it’s not a particularly safe, or pleasant area to walk on one’s own after dark.

I went without for 3 years, would occasionally borrow one. I’ve commuted by train for 5 years now, but have a ‘daily’ car (it’s used maybe twice a week) as a bike, kid and dog transporter which I rarely use personally with just me in it. I got an electric bike to cover shopping etc, which I now do on an ‘as needed’ basis from the local corner shop, and haven’t been in a large supermarket since before Covid. Won’t work for all, but might for some

Depends where you live, I’m in London - don’t even know how to drive

Either my partners drove, or Uber was my bf if I needed to get somewhere quick.

For the rest, the tube works great and buses aren’t bad if you aren’t in a rush

I lived in Edinburgh for a bit, bought a cheap ass bike from Decathlon and never used a tram or bus once, but did get distracted with doing a lap of Arthur’s Seat every time I went for a swim…

Could not. I live in a very remote place (7 miles to the nearest shop, no public transport) and although I could ride a horse to town, there’s nowhere to tie them up.

In the middle

I couldn’t do without mine, I’d hate it if I couldn’t just get up and go somewhere in an emergency say, or taking myself off out for the day, plus there I work the buses don’t run regularly enough for my early start time and I’d hate to be late for work

No because buses are always late, train's have so many cancellations and we work all over the place. We will use public transport if we are traveling to the capital and staying in a hotel where there's no parking available, but we would much prefer to drive there. X

Nope, we both have children who's "other parent" lives over 100 miles away (in opposite directions I might add) so logistically it would be almost impossible but for day to day general work etc I reckon we could.

Belfast

I have an hour's commute each way every day. There are no trains within 10 miles of my starting point in the morning or within 25 miles of my destination.

It would require 3 separate buses and take at least 2 hrs to cover the same journey.

As I visit customers a couple of mornings a week on the way in and the same again on the way home the only practical option is to take the car.

A car maybe, but not without my van because I’m classed as a peripatetic worker and constantly on the move. It would be impossible to do my job without it.

No. I have chronic pain issues and a trip to the supermarket used to wipe me out. I chose a house next door to it in the end. If I had to give up my car now I would probably move somewhere very close to a supermarket and some other shops.

Not really where I live, the public transport is dire at best (and bloody expensive!). The nearest (small) supermarket is 5 miles away. Doctors, dentist, hairdresser, beautician are all at least 5 miles away. Most of my friends live at least 10 miles away.

Plus, I really like driving

"Noooo kids need cars to ferry all of their crap around in or donkey (that's me) has bloody carry it all....."

It's funny how the tables can turn, it is I who am ferried around by my kids.

During the first outbreak of covid they took me to work and picked me up for over 6 months...they worked it out between them. They never moaned once!

I have never driven...26 lessons. I'd like to pass my test this year!
