Ok well I am on my MAC at the mo, can't be arsed to go to a windows machine lol

But basically you right click the folder, go to properties, and it is usually in the advanced section you can set a password.

I shall however move shortly and give a more detailed answer..or shout M as he is in our office

Because you can also set permissions, so if your daughter has a different log in to your admin one, that is also easily done.

You can set it up so the Administrator has a different password to other users, then whatever files are in your section they can't see.

My son is IT qualified and i just asked out of curiosity, he said you cant but you can set it for different users, right click on it, go to properties, then security, and then set permission for different users. Hope that helps.

Assuming that you are using windows, your best option is to set up auser account for your secret stuff and one for general user. Password the secret one. Windows allows you to switch user account fairly easily.

Or you can compress the files into a zip. That way you can password the files. You have to download xp and run it that way though

I use 'File Cabinet'. It will give you and icon in your programs list (or on your desktop if you wish) just the same as a normal program. When you click it it will lock or unlock a folder that you can put hidden away anywhere you like. When it's locked the folder is either hidden or when you click on it it is empty.

With multiple users, you could restrict the folder to just your user. But... any other admin user could then take ownership of the folder and view your files.

Glad Folder Lock worked for you, that's the best way to do it with a single user. And it can also encrypt your data, so it's doubly-safe from prying eyes. Don't forget your password though!

She has her own laptop, but in getting new screen, hence needing to hide a folder lol

The other choice here is to use cloud storage - Skydrive, Dropbox, Google Drive etc.

They are also off your machine in case your account password is compromised.

Truecrypt is the best way. Windows folder permissions can be overriden by an Admin account and Admin can be obtained fairly easily using a bootable USB stick and the right tools - yes I have lost Admin credentials on a domain!

You can TC an entire volume, for example a USB stick but any purely 'password' based access control can always be overridden by a higher tier of access to the OS unless it is cryptographically supported. Hence encrypted home folders on Ubuntu/Debian/other linuxes are fairly safe as without the password you can never extract the files; whereas a folder with permissions blocking other users on windows (NTFS and any variety) can be overridden by Admin - don't ask about FAT it's not got any security whatsoever.

Just don't forget your passwords!

The TrueCrypt reply was relevant whatever type of storage you're using...it's non-device dependent and free.

there are several options, but they are all over complicated, get a USB drive or memory stick and lock it away when you are not using the computer... USB drive can't be seen by the wrong person if it's in your pocket!

BUT don't forget to buy two so you can back it up securely too!

Best and most secure option is as other posters said , usb flash drive and they are dirt cheap theses days maplins do a 16GB one for 9.99 !!

All our stuff is backed up onto one although i would challenge anyone to get past the security on my PC lol

Buy a SanDisk usb stick, they come with the option to password protect all your data.

However nothing is truly protected as I have 1 program that completely busts all passwords on a machine and another forensic type program that will recover data even after 2 formats of a hard drive
