if it did I could do a bad thing knowing that if I did a good thing straight after the bad would be cancelled out

No. The bad deed is not going to go away and whoever did it will know it. Depending on what it is the bad deed may be put right though.

in the sense that you recognise the bad stuff and change your ways or try to compensate? That's one thing running a sort of good deed/bad deed balance sheet is another
