Rach is at uni and comes home for the weekend.

On return to her flat in Halls, she discovered a leak on the wall, which has resulted in her laptop getting wet.

This leak wasnt there before she left. The door is locked while she is away.

Is there anything she can do?

If she has insurance on the room (when I was at uni my parents' home insurance covered it) that may be a line to go down

Yes, if it's University halls then they should have contents insurance

Not sure what the details are but her flat mates have asked her if she has insurance and she said no, but i think thats for the laptop.

Surely when its not been broken into and the damage is caused by something the Uni could have fixed, its there fault.

Take some pics in case of a claim.

Dont start up the lap top if very wet.Let it dry out naturally in a warm environment.

Obviously report to admin of the Halls at Uni.If caused by a leak then up to them to make good and put right.

Did she take out any insurance for her contents at Uni?

It may well be that the uni states valuables left at own risk... hope it gets sorted but having worked in a uni that you might find that they have a clause like that. hope not for you. good luck

Shes not having much luck, she got a brand new laptop for Christmas and couple months later, got spooked and spilled her tea over it. Still works but sometimes crashes, certain keys dont work.

She took her older laptop to uni and this happens which isnt her fault. She shouldnt have to carry a heavy laptop home with her every weekend.

I work for uni maintenance, if its uni property leaking .. ie a pipe etc in the wall then it will be the uni`s responsibility to cover all repairs to damaged goods ..... end of the day its not your fault you have a leak ! ... take photos etc and report to accommodation office asap

Just for perspective...

When I was at university I didn't have a computer at all and used the ones in the library. Most people did (it was 1991 and personal computers were mostly quite expensive and not very portable!).

When taking work with me anywhere I had to carry folders and books. I somehow managed to get a good degree anyway.

I know everyone from junior school children up now think a laptop is essential but plenty of people have managed to get good degrees without one, and some continue to do so.

That said, I hope she gets hers sorted out.
