Calling Lorry Drivers

Genuine Question

Are you trained to overtake other lorries at 0.001 MPH faster than the lorry you are overtaking?

Best intentions, then you lose your momentum. Seen plenty of lorries get going and then flub just as they hit the head wind of the lorry their trying to overtake.

Seems evil but I'm sure almost all of the thousands of lorry drivers wouldn't do that intentionally but one might.

It’s worse in the USA where there is zero lane discipline.

We followed a pair of Lorry’s for about 15 miles that were edging back and forth trying to get past each other.

Speed limiters, you would think that they would allow just that little extra for overtaking. Must be really frustrating

I think it's what's known in the trade as a "loadblock"

With the ups & downs on the A30 in Devon and Cornwall I'm quite used to it - Sourton hill in particular is a HGV momentum killer - especially eastbound - I'm often behind two lorries here for 5 + miles!

It’s some drivers mentality, they’re probably stubborn and one doesn’t want to give quarter to the other.

As a former LGV driver. I like to think that I was a courteous one, and recognised when the speed differential was minimal. I’d lift off the shouty pedal and drop back. It didn’t hold me up any, and didn’t create the rolling 56.2moh rolling roadblock.

Downhill I'll overtake cars easy enough uphill with 44 tonne it's anyone's guess it's not intentional if a lorry is struggling to pass me ill back off a little bit so they can pass some won't do the same but sometimes with how drops are planned 2 miles an hour on a 10 hour day of driving can make the difference to being on time or late

Driving a lorry, particularly long distance, is all about maintaining momentum and keeping your average speed up. People say “1/2 mph makes no difference”, but over a 56 hour driving week, that’s 28 miles, or 1/2 hour pretty much, which is enough to catch or miss a delivery, or a ferry, and is very often the difference between home in your own bed Friday night, or not until Saturday afternoon. Given the choice between getting past someone, or spending the weekend in a lay-by, I know which one I’d choose.

That said, if ever I had someone stuck outside me unable to get past, it’s only right to ease off enough to let them pass.

Had to follow 15 miles spoof

Got to the end the 2 lorries responsible got stuck in the exit dual lane

Side to side between lampposts & exit sign, kerbs

One stuck in the cab the other fuming foreign expletives both laden

Like squashed crammed marshmellow

I'm a Lorry driver in the USA. There's some good ones and some boneheads. Maintaining a constant speed is very important to fuel economy. That being said, I slow down and let the other guy pass, if he's taking too long to pass me.

Trucker (live in Newcastle)

Don't have that issue in a V8 haha. I'm one of the lucky ones, who has a truck that will do 59 before restrictor kicks in (62 before I get an overspeed) but majority of the time I see it, chances are it's not done internationally, but bit of curtesy driver in lane 1 could lift a little to get that past

The question that should be getting asked is..... car drivers on dual carriage ways and motorways, why are you going so dangerously slow that hgvs are having to either brake or overtake you?

Worst is when you just pass and the nob on the inside gets a bit of overspeed and you have to start all over again

It’s called progression! You can over take any vehicle when it is safe and legal to do so and making sure you come back down/or stick to speed limits! I wasn’t trained to do this when doing my hgv 1 or 2 but I went out on a course with RoSPA for a couple days on motorcycle course for advanced riders they are also police motorcyclists and they told me the above! Plus being loaded in hgv and even 1 or 2 mph or 6mph when others are restricted to 50 your gonna lose momentum and if the lorry infront is empty and your full and you hit a slight incline that if over taken wouldn't effect that lorry being behind you as by the time you off the incline your back up to speed and not been slowed enough for it to effect him behind! But if you have lost the speed and momentum hitting that incline cause he’s slower you gonna loose more speed and momentum then resulting in you having to build it back up just to catch the same lorry and do it again! So no matter how long it takes to overtake another hgv it’s more practical and efficient but for the car drivers behind you overtaking that hgv its the worst thing ever and they will abuse and make it known they hate you! I absolutely fucking love doing it though

And the ones that are loaded and your empty but your both 56 but he’s hit a little incline and then you get all the way along side and his cabs about 5 ft from your rear and he’s back up to speed and will just stay there and not let ya back in!! There first class cunts

I thought HGVs had a speed limiter fitted to them.

It’s not as bad now most are automatic but when you had manual gears and you lost your speed it took ages to go back up the gears. So as for the question it all depends on the driver being overtaken a given rule is to drop bk abit and allow truck to pass but some are wankers. But my pet hate is car drivers that go slow till you try and overtake then they speed up
