parking charges

Oxfordshire/Hampshire

I exceeded 11 minutes over parking period at a retail outlet car park.(I actually didn't realize there was a time restriction) I do have a receipt with times on when I paid for my goods. Anyone got similar charges and won an appeal?

People are having this problem in Cornwall all the time lately. Some win the appeal and some don't. I would try and appeal, can't make things worse I don't think

It seems that alot depends on whether you were parked on council (public) site or whether it's private and the ticket issued by a commercial enforcement.

If you can show that the signage was not clear then you do have a chance.

By law you are allowed 20 minutes grace. I won my appeal all you need is your receipts. Lodge your appeal saying you are being guided by citizens advice plus stating the 20 minutes grace good luck. If they pursue tell them to take you to court.

Definitely worth to appeal. You are generally allowed 10 minutes grace period, if the car park was busy it might have taken some time to find a space and then further time to get the change or queue for the machine.

Definitely worth appealing. Also definitely go to the Ombudsman if they refuse to agree.

Had exactly the same, their website claims the parking restrictions enhance the shoppers experience by keeping carparks safe and well managed.... After appealing the ticket I had to provide evidence I purchased something from the outlet, either shop receipt or use of card payment from bank statement.... Was surprised they happily dropped the £100 charge.

In my case, I parked twice on same day with several hours between each visit. They actually told me that I never left the car park on my first visit as they had no camera record of me leaving even though I was literally there for no more than 15 mins. They therefore assumed I had parked there for something like 6 or 7 hours. I think the fine was £90. Of course I appealed, they realised how ridiculous their assumption was and dropped the fine.

I guess it's a private firm at the shopping outlet. If so it's a receipt for payment due. Unlike council parking fines it's just a demand for money. I wouldn't appeal it as they are just trying to extract money from you. Any appeal with a reason not to pay is just an admission that you have done wrong. Appeal asking for proof of where you parked and use their time as much as you can.

I can't say it won't go to court but never heard of any private company wasting time and money to go that way. Remember that you have the upper hand. They want your money and you don't want to hand it over. Last time it happened to me I went to the hotel and told the manager if he didn't deal with it I will never stay there again. Guess what, it was removed.

Yes. I did. Was quite a bit of work in the end. I think it could have been easier but I was determined to win.

I did not pay. Eventually they decided not to go to court but the date was set etc and I had to file papers but they dropped it.

There are specific websites that will do the work for you for a small fee.

These are private parking tickets usually and not admissible in law.

Oh,that reminds me of a charge I got with photographic porridge of my overstay.

The pic on entry was a Nissan Micra, the other my LWB old van leaving.

I ignored that one.

Singnage is king in a commercial car park. We got off a parking notice charge because they had 22 parking related notices in a park with 17 spaces. Some of the signs were ambiguous and one old one threaten clamping which is illegal.

Just to say, don’t ignore it!! It could cost you more and it if it goes to court it can cost a lot. Would affect your credit rating as well. There should be clear signs showing the time limits, it is worth appealing, if you did any shopping there or if the signage is missing or poor. Small print is not a defence for them.

It's all good. Got a letter today saying tge charge has been waived so it pays off to challenge a charge and not to ignore it.
