Abortion cut off point

Modern science means that babies born at less than 24 weeks old can survive. Does this mean we should come up with a new, lower, time limit on abortion? And if not, why not?

the thought of the foetus being in pain at any point during the abortion process, scares me rigid...

am not sure which week is the limit to be honest

Gosh, what a difficult question. When are you destroying life when are you not? Some things are far to in depth and difficult to discuss on a forum so I'll pass.

In all fairness not all tests that check for any annomalies can be done by the 12 week proposal that is being banded about and 91% of TOP's are carried out within this 12 week period, it is only in exceptional circumstances that the 24 week rule is applied. Such as babies that may have Edwards Syndrome or very small chances of survival after birth. At this point it is a difficult decision to make for any mother, without being made feel worse by government and/or media.

It is only because science has allowed us to help these wee bundles of joy that this is a debate at this moment. If they could not survive at this age, the limitation on abortion would not be an issue.

I appreciate a lot will not agree with me, but I do think they need to look at the testing rules before going down the root of lowering the time limits. It is only once the tests can be done that we can then truly look at this particular area of abortion law.....

i cant think of anything worse than being pregnant with a baby you dont realy want.

Totally agree. Friend of mine had to have one at 24 weeks due to the baby having a massive tumor. Baby would not have survived and mothers life was at risk if she went full term. Let well alone until medical science in all related issues catches up. It's hard enough to go through without the additional pressure.

Thats the thing there are pros and cons.

If there is a medical reason that you should then fair enough.

The fact that the abortion cut off as it stands is very close the age when my granddaughter was born and such a tiny tot can fight for her life.....

I know there are women out there that use abortion as a form of contraception.

There is also a lot of ladies that would dearly love to hold such a precious gift in their arms but cant.

I feel it should be lowered. Obviously there are such situations which would need thought such as babies which wouldn't survive outside the womb, like those with Edwards syndrome and various other conditions even for women who have been raped. But for people who have accodently got pregnant in my eyes tough there is enough birth control around for this not to happen nowadays if they don't want the child there are plenty of people looking to adopt who through no fault of there own are unable to have children. A child is a gift from god not a god given right for everyone. As another poster said pre term babies are surviving in this day and age so who has the right to take away the blessing and life.

Not all prem babies survive. The cost, financially and emotionally is enormous. It is a difficult one for me as I had a live birth at 25 weeks but I really can't see that terminating at 24 weeks can be easy for anyone leaving it that long and certainly not as a 'form of contraception'.

Lower the limit too far and we return to back street, illegal abortions and the horror of that. Older women I know that had abortions before it was legal tell such horror stories.

My best friend had her daughter 9 years ago now. She was born at 23+3 as I say she is now a 9 year old girl and is doing very well and has allways met her milestones. But I do know some are not as lucky

There was an interesting series two years ago on this. Painful to watch but made some very interesting points. Once someone is here we have a duty to care for that child but it is an ethical minefield whether keeping the child alive against all odds is in anyones interest.

Some of the long term effects of being born premature are only now coming to light. Infertility is one that is emerging for many women who were very prem (below 30 weeks) babies.

If a mothers health is at serious risk then termination is legal up to full term... So lowering the limit would not impact on this. I am very pro choice but the limit of 24 does sit a little uneasy with me but i would imagine that a very small percentage are carried out at this stage and those that are are usually for medical reasons as opposed to social ones. A 20 week limit would sit better purely because there has never to my.knowledge been a foetus born at 20 weeks to survive so i.m.o life can not have ' began ' by this stage.

As a woman we have choices to do what we want.. I guess the earlier the termination the better.. However sometimes mother nature haults the birth of a child due to things wrong with it so it has to be aborted..

Its a woman's choice to have a termination whether its right or wrong sometimes circumstances happen..

I feel uncomfortable when God is mentioned in this debate, we should really keep religion out of this, in my opinion it is only used to add to the guilt trip of someone who is making one of the hardest decisions in their life.

At 24 weeks the contraception and raped arguments hold little water for me, I accept it's possible (soldier in Afghanistan!), but most women know they are pregnant long before 24 weeks.

I believe that if someone is terminating at 24 weeks then they have a very good reason. I am pro choice.

I am uncomfortable with terminations full stop, but I am even more uncomfortable with restricting the choice of women with what is possibly the hardest decision in their life.

Because some premature babies survive from 26 weeks then there is an unnatural assumption and expectation that all can and sadly this is not the case. Even if babies do survive they can have long term health problems and require lifelong care. I would imagine that most mothers would want their babies to be born and given the utmost medical care in order to keep that baby alive but is the right decision in the long run.

Looking back all these years later when my own baby died at 24 weeks, I did not have to make the decision of whether my child was given all the medical care but would remain profoundly disabled, the decision was taken from me when my baby died. I obviously wanted that child to survive more than anything in the world at the time, but now, well does it make me a bad person to think ab out the quality of life that child would have had. Its an issue which can't really easily be answered

Having had a baby at 24 weeks and a day, he did not survive, after 2 weeks of fighting.

I am anti abortion, when used and abused, but I would not bring God into this.

I think of rape cases, where perhaps the woman does not realise until say after 12 weeks (if that was the limit) and no woman through a law should be made to face to have a baby conceived from violence.

Also I know many friends with babies 24 - 26 weeks old gestation, who are perfectly fine.

It does not sit comfortably with me though the method of aborting a 23 week old foetus.

I think though more should be done on promoting safe sex, and women who think oh well sod the contraception, or morning after pill, there is another option.

It is a life, and one where it should be ended for the right reasons, and adoption is always a choice.

If u set limits by certain criteria e.g saying only allow abortion beyond 12 weeks in cases such as rape how are you going to prove a woman has actually been raped and isnt just saying it to get an abortion ? I dont think it would be sensible i.m.o. As for the god thing its nothing to do with god... Me and my husband made our children... Bugger all to do with 'god' It may be different for others of course.

Well yes unfortunately there are people like that, but I suppose I did not mention them, as they are definitely not going to consider abortion, can't upgrade their house else

Its the fathers i often feel for as they dont get a say in if their child lives or dies. i have a male friend who would now have a child the same age as mine if his gf at the time didnt abort. she felt she wasnt ready to be a parent and wanted to live her life first.

It haunts him he never met his child.

an interesting point to note is the fact that the majority of termination agencies will not take an appointment for termination below 8 weeks and tend to suggest 10 to 12 weeks to women who seek their services .

I had a termination with BPAS at 7 weeks x
