Towards the end of last year I began learning Dutch. Im still practicing.

I can speak a little and understand a bit of French and Italian. Briefly dabbled in Chinese didn’t last long lol. I love language.

Anyone else learning a foreign language? If so what?

I remember a little bit of French and some German from school and also I learnt Greek at night school. If you don’t use it though it goes out of your head I find. I watch a lot of Scandinavian tv programs so I’d love to learn Danish or Swedish. I believe they are quite tricky though. I’d love to learn Spanish and Italian as well.

Lekker is the most important Dutch word though.

I know fewer Chinese words than the number of years Charlotte and I have been together. She says that there is no point speaking to me in Chinese because I don’t understand.

By the way, ‘I need to fuck you’ is something like ‘war sh-yow gan ni’, which is always useful.

I think Italian and Spanish first as a bit easier as you are right the others, including greek, are I am sure a bit more difficult.

Yeah I think if you have a bit of French it helps with learning Spanish and then Italian as there are a few similarities with word formations. I guess because they are based on Latin. Greek was hard especially as there are letters that aren’t in our alphabet.

I hear Danish is really hard but it is very similar to Swedish so, again, I’d you learn one it helps with the other.

I'm learning Arabic. I thought it was nigh on impossible at first because of the different script, but after a long while a pattern started to emerge from all the weird "scribbles" and now they make sense. It's a really flowery language

French, Spanish and Italian are the three I can speak, read, write and understand. I can understand a bit of German and know a tiny bit of Russian.

I have just signed up for a sign language course but am yet to start it properly.

There is the story of why I decided to learn and kept on using my languages which I embarrassed myself in front of my big bosses with very early in my career but that’s for another day

Learning other languages is not particularly encouraged or supported well in this country unfortunately as is in other countries where almost all the kids learn other languages not only at their normal school but by going for additional tuition privately or otherwise

Been learning french for about 5 years as I work in Cameroon and Côte d’Ivoire but I’m useless at it since lockdown , on calls it’s so hard compared to in person so I just use a translator now. I do like watching french films though , subtitles help a lot , I know la vie en rose and city of lost children word for word almost

My French is pretty fluent, but it does take me a day or two of submersion to get properly into mental gear with it.

I think what others have already said, about one language leading into another is very true. Not only does it unlock synonyms in vocabulary, but it also teaches your brain to make the links between words that have the same meaning.

I’ve a little Italian, Spanish and German from working and travelling through them years ago. Dutch is the one I’d really like to master, having spent a long time working in the country and with Dutch/Belgian colleagues. I can understand most of what’s said, and written, but my spoken Dutch is still a work in progress.

I listened to some Russian poetry spoken in modern Russian and couldn't make out what was what. But got onto a translation and phoentics site and firstly see the words and then could hear the actual words and then pronounce them.

Es gab eine österreichische Fernsehsendung über einen Polizeidetektivhund, der Kommisar Rex hieß. Das war ein guter, alberner Spaß.

BSL (British Sign Language) is amazing and is the only language I've learnt to proficient level (3) as an adult.

As a child growing up in Malaysia I can speak Chinese (Hokkien, mother tongue), Malay (national language) and English (my first language).

Yes I do. I am learning myself, spanish and german and I use the total immersion technique where for an hr or so. I put on the targeted language and meanwhile, doing the apps like duolingo and verbs, vocab learning, it is fun, one german story that I like to listen to is called die größte chatz, here it is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZ7Vsi4W3BE&t=10s it is fun
