How do you make yours?

Simple version - Marmite on toast, topped with grated mature Cheddar, and finished with freshly ground black pepper.

Elaborate version - make a mixture using grated mature Cheddar, chopped ham, chopped spring onions, toasted sesame seeds, double cream and freshly ground black pepper. Spread onto toast and grill until bubbly.

Typing this while I enjoy a shop-bought bake a home Croque Monsieur.

Putting the 'cum' in Eboracum

I make my own Croque Monsieur, but my simple cheese on toast is sliced cheddar on white bread topped with Worcestershire sauce. Mmmmmmm.

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

I keep it simple - bread and cheese. Neither of which I have in the house at the moment and now all I fancy is cheese on toast. You're a very naughty woman Pearl.

Love cheese on toast....very simple just extra mature cheddar under the grill on whatever bread I have at the time but prefer seeded varieties. If you're not counting the calories a fried cheese sandwich in olive oil with a fried egg on top!!!

Fried cheese sandwich with fried egg, I like that idea, and shall have a go next weekend when I am camping.

Should have a health warning on it but I do weaken once in a while. Best with a runny egg....hope you like yours that way?

Indeed I like my eggs runny.

Not one to count calories.

When I go camping, I usually have a substantial breakfast/brunch, then dinner in the evening.

Fried cheese sandwich with a fried egg sounds lush! May even fry it in a mixture of butter and olive oil for extra tastiness!

I melt grated cheese in a pan with some milk and a dash of mustard, then pour over hot toast.

Cheese on Toast? Warburtons super-thick sliced bread (the one in the green wrapper), Waitrose West Country Farmhouse Vintage Cheddar (Strength 7!!) and a splash of Lea and Perrins extra mature Worcester Sauce (also Waitrose). Yummy !!!

Compared with some versions above, this is very much stripped to the bare essentials (oooh er missus!) but it's the quality of the ingredients that hits the spot.....

Cheese on toast is good but if you really want to step it up a notch and impress your date then it's all about...

BRIE on toast, with a lovely caramelised onion chutney.

Method;

Remove slicing instrument from slicing instrument holder

Slice Brie in 1cm thickness

Prepare cooking appliance "grill" for hot cooking

Let the Brie and bread of choice become acquainted

Let Brie melt on bread

Apply chutney

Throw it in yer gob!!!!

My version of caramelised onion sauce/chutney.

Pan fry chopped garlic and sliced onion very slowly until caramelised.

De-glace the pan with a dash of mango and orange juice (that's what I drink for breakfast and keep in the fridge all the time).

Add some demerara sugar and lemon juice to taste, and reduce over low heat until thickened.

This is what I like to have with my roast duck for Christmas lunch.

Just for you;

2 red onions, balsamic vinegar, red wine vinegar, brown sugar and olive oil.

Cook the onion over a low heat with the oil and any other things you may add (varying herbs) for around 20 mins, the add the balsamic and red wine vinegar, simmer until brown and sexy then pour in to a jar. DO NOT do what I did and cook until it looks like it does in the jar. It'll be burnt. Yuk!!!

Step away from the grill….!.

Take stale bread rolls ripped in half, heavily butter, top with grated cheese which has been mixed though with raw egg and finely diced onion, then “oven bake” them until they take on the desired colour and texture.

Add a generous dollop ketchup or brown sauce and a good sprinkling of sea salt ...... then simply eat……!!!

oh but don't forget to wipe ya chin "or chins" afterwards....

I have to have extra mature cheese on toast and I do spread marmite on first, gives it that edge I feel. I'm not an elaborate cook though, I don't have the expertise to cook all those tasty recipes that are posted up.

in my younger days I once told my mother in law that anyone could cook and it didn't require skills. I was wrong and some people can turn the blandest of ingredients into a really tasty meal
