If you love someone let them free.

If they come back they are yours

If they dont they never where.

I interpret that to mean give some one time and space, dont try to suffacate them or demand things of them. Let them be their own person, otherwise you can easily scare them off

The rest of the replies were just hijacking the thread, Diamond was the only one that didn't, that's why.

I interpret the saying also as not smothering someone and demanding their time and attention. If they feel comfortable in being with you, they will seek out your company and you know that they really do want to be with you rather than you demanding they be

There's nothing like a good fart when you have trapped wind.

If you cage a bird and oprn the door ....... it will fly free and maybe come back if happy to be there ...if it dont you know it needed to escape.

If you let something go, do it because you genuinely want it to be free and not because of some contrived 'scheme' or plan that you hope it will come back.

If in it's genuine freedom it chooses to come back then see that as a bonus.

The act of love, in my opinion, is the completely unselfish motive behind freeing something or someone to do what it or they want to.

Think Buddhism and attachment... you are free when you can let go of your attachments. You can still continue to appreciate, love that thing/person but you can only control you.

Ahhh but you see you do get it. Isn't respecting their choice the same as letting them go, metaphorically speaking? If you love someone, you will surely want them to be happy and feel fulfilled with their life. And so the saying goes….let them choose what makes them happy, rather than entrap or coerce them into making choices solely to make you happy.

My ex-hubby knew what it means when I informed him about my decision to leave him for my late partner, and said if he could not make me happy, then he would gladly step aside for the person who could.

He handled the divorce paperwork and saved ourselves a fortune, no lawyer was involved, no argument about who owned what, let me take whatever I wish etc...

I am eternally grateful for his big heart, and regret to this day for hurting him.

He remains one of the first 3 people I would call in times of crisis.

Letting go is probably one of teh hardest things to do when you are still attached to the person. I agree that it is the ultimate form of love to let go ... but then does that person really have a choice? If one party wants to part... there can really only be one outcome?

In my case he wanted to go, but could not do it. He just could not bring himself to leave. I had to push him in the end - even though I did not want to. But, in the long run, it was the best for both of us.
