And sarcasm get lost in translation or misinterpreted in the forum?

I can have a dark humour and be sarcastic quite often but I actually don’t mean to offend anybody (not that it would keep me up at night) just wondered with such a broad spectrum of folk from all over if it’s a common for it to be taken the wrong way.

Light breezy topic for a Saturday morning I know

Think it's a regional thing too!

Oh well, as they say about profiles - you can't please 'em all!

In a town full of colours

All the time especially if it's regarding an emotive subject

Yeah I can see that, but I also can see why sometimes they’re the subjects that need lightening the most?

I’m not talking like posts about dead relatives and stuff obviously

Belfast

I saw a funny thread recently where the op was deliberately ironic and the first dozen or so to comment took what he said literally.

There was nothing nasty or malicious but everyone started giving him advice or asking what he was going to do? One person attacked him over his comments.

In my head it was very obvious that it was a joke and I couldn't believe that no-one else saw it that way. It was only when I commented that surgeons had been busy that week with all the humour bypasses that others saw it for what it was.

It’s difficult to read a lot by text. I’m guilty of just whacking down a reply that doesn’t explain much of the humour behind it. A one liner is never going to have the depth of the author in it.

Like the op, I’ve read loads where I’ve seen humour ( intended or not) and I’ve seen the thread turn into a serious debate, but then maybe that is just good conversation, I dunno. How long can you keep a joke thread opening going?

South

Not so often on the forums (that I know of) but I do get messages from local fab users regarding my updates who tell me I’m a bit random.

There are plenty of dry humoured folk on the forum that I enjoy reading.

.

It happens. Sometimes people come on the forum to use it as a form of escapism, are in a bad mood/feeling low and so either project those negative feelings or read it through the lense of being meh.

That being said, sometimes sarcasm is used to shield a bit of cruelty. I guess it's about comprehension on both sides - how it will come across and what is actually being said.

I think it depends on the subject, who said the sarcasm/ dark humour, and the person reading it.

Some people literally mean xyz so it's easy to see why some may assume that person is being serious.

King's Crustacean

I wouldn't know how to use sarcasm or irony all I know is that everyone who posts on threads writes about how lovely they are and what 'other folk' do.

A two way process surely.

Dover

I think the issue is often compounded with peoples literacy. A well structured, grammatically correct and properly punctuated statement can convey exactly what its author intended; provided its reader has the ability to correctly interpret it.

Something poorly written is obviously easy to misconstrue, but even the best prose can be misread.
