Ditto to that. Can't stand them. Of that era, I'm a Stones fan, real music by real rock stars. The Beatles were 60s glam pop and nothing more.

The Beatles should be remembered for making some decent pop music. Would it cut the grade today? No. There are any number of bands from the 70's, 80's, 90's and a few from the 00's who have done as much for music as they did but actually make better music in the process. I would name them but this isn't the thread to do so!

And that's it in a nutshell basically. Good for their time but not better than later counterparts.

Exceptional for their time..totally changed the American dominated popular music industry..but you are right, much of their output only stands up in the context of their time...now we have any number of bands who musically are exceptional.

Absolute bollocks. The beatles musically were so advanced that bands these days still don't come close. Musically they are on a par with the Beethovens, Mozarts and Bachs. You can like them or not like them but you can never challenge their musicality

Some of the Beatles stuff may seem 'dated' today, but it was fifty years ago.How much stuff today will we even listen to in fifty years time ?

We can debate all day who is greater largely down to our own tastes.

But in revolutionising, and tranforming the music scene and their recording and writing legacy which they left us, have laid the foundations of all we have today.

In that the Beatles Have no equals !!

Nobody is doubting that they were advanced. When it was first invented the stone wheel was advanced but you wouldn't use them now!! If you want to talk about advanced let's reference Kraftwerk or New Order and then listen to any of their work and how it hasn't aged. That's the sign of a truly great artist.

The thing about The Beatles is that their music is still regularly played on Radio sations all over the world.

They, along with a small number of other bands have stood the test of time, while most of today's "stars" will be forgotten in a few months, but even today there are exceptions.

What they were able to do was crack the music charts in UK and USA and their legacy lives on throughout the world and especially in Liverpool.

Even today, their music creates new records with Guinness World Records confirming 1631 people set a new world record at The Pier Head in Liverpool at 12 Noon today singing rounds of the Beatles song Love Me Do, more details for those interested on the BBC website.

Being a good Liverpudlian, ofcourse I love The Beatles, but Pink Floyd, Genesis and Queen are much more my cup of tea....

Nobody would call themselves ignorant. Kraftwerk were important to music as the Beatles were. One thing we can never question is other people's taste; I don't mind that people enjoy the Beatles so much, I just don't agree about their quality. My point in referencing Kraftwerk and New Order was that they showed genuine musical quality and how do I think this is demonstrable: their music stands the test of time and could easily be released now and be mistaken for modern day music. The Beatles couldn't. They were good, but not that good.

I cant say im their biggest fan but they have a song for every kind of mood a person can be in. I listen to music a lot and have everything The Beatles have released, but then again i can say the same for The Stones, The Who etc.....But something always stood out about The Beatles....knock em all ya like....Its easy to become jaded about music that was made long ago...But they are/were British, a great export and great songwriters and have done more thatn others to promote this great land.

My favourite Beatle song? Within you and without you - that was what I heard wafting from my sisters bedroom one day in 1967 and led to me pestering the life out of my Mum to buy me a copy of Sgt Peppers - which I finally got two YEARS later cos she thought it 'wasn't suitable' for a 6 year old!!!

Whether you actually like any of their stuff is the same as any other artiste - it's personal preference (now where have I heard that before.....?????? )

Thank you for the personal attack. I dont consider myself ignorant musically or in general.

Yes, I think the catalogue of work the Beatles created was exceptional. They were progressive in a time when music exploded with creativity.

I think there were great bands before and some great bands since. New Order did some good stuff and I have some of the records. As for Kraftwerk, I did not like them at the time, although Model was catchy. Did their music change the musical landscape? Somehow, I dont think so. There was loads of synthasised music during that period, and like Kraftwerk, does not stand the test of time.

Of course, all my personal opinion. I would not dare to call you ignorant... just maybe tone deaf!

First things first, I didn't personally attack you. Man up.

Secondly, how did Kraftwerk shape music?!?!? As much as the Beatles shaped music that's for sure. Often discounted because traditional instruments weren't used instead they created a sound that was the birth of electronic music subsequently electronic music is used in a high % in modern day music from the likes of Rihanna to U2. American pop music is now almost exclusively electronic based, who created that electronic sound? Kraftwerk (among others).

We get it, you like the Beatles, nobody can argue their quality and the music they produced but there are, in my opinion, far better bands/groups/artists that have done more for popular music in it's current guise than the Beatles did.

I like the White double album. Its so varied in style. Add on Hey Jude, Sgt Pepper, LSD and many many more. Now here's showing my age I saw the Beatles in 1962, prior to them being famous. On the same bill as Helen Shapiro...don't get me started.
