Homeless in B&B

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

Newsnight again...

Barking and Dagenham paying £400 a week for a family to have one room in a B&B hostel. Croydon paying one B&B hostel nearly £2m for inadequate and illegal housing. Horrendous report. Seventeen families using one kitchen.

We're going backwards. I remember when it was like this in the 70s when my family ended up homeless and we ended up in B&B.

£2m??? Someone's getting a backhander methinks. Local politics is more bent than fifteen £4 notes printed in pink and lemon.

Sad to say it but they were probably lucky they were families. Couple or single people get almost no help from councils with housing now, regardless of how desperate their situation.

This country is in a mess.

in Lancashire

the Croydon issue is one company running several large hotels, most are absolute toilets and are used as temp accommodation for many local authority / government departments..

would not put animals in some of them tbh..

One of the families was evicted as part of the piece because they were deemed to be intentionally homeless.

Moneybox Live was covering landlords and tenants yesterday too.

The H&S person stated that they were not suitable for children at all.

What the government needs to do is stop letting the immigrants into this country, then the local authorities would be in a better position to help couples and single people because there would be more housing to go round

Didn't see the programme so cannot comment on the particular case but a council will deem someone intentionally homeless because, for example, they have their home repossessed as they cannot afford their mortgage. In those cases they are told they have to find a private rented accommodation or they might put them in B&B

I really don't know how they get away with it!

I'm a landlord that rents out a multiple occupancy house and the rules and regs are pretty well set out! Having 17 people and 1 kitchen! - doesn't need a genius to work out that's wrong!

You need to be licenced over 5 people/ more than 2 family's etc.

I suppose they get around it with it being b&b but still, building regs need to be observed along with minimum ratio's of facilities ie bathrooms/ living areas etc etc.

What they need to do is look at all the old boarded up properties and start sorting them out, make them into social housing. There a re loads of derelict places in evesham and Stratford upon Avon!

There was a programme about it recently ab the numbers were staggering

It's even worse than that. The OP stated it was 17 families.

That's true too as I drive past a derelict church that has planning permission for several flats but a year down the line it's still derelict
