National Health Insurance?

Can anyone say why we pay this TAX and what we get out of paying it, with changes in the system now and the near future I am becoming confused.

Free medical care, rock up to hospital needing an operation and you will get it without being asked to pay for it.

The NHS is the envy of many countries where you have to worry about being able to afford to go to the drs, where the level of insurance you buy determines the level of care you get.

Exactly as above. I don't think that anywhere else in the world you get anywhere near the same quality of medical aid for tree.

How many times have you seen/heard stories of someone having an accident or emergency abroad and it costing the earth. Like tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The cut backs suck but it's still an amazing service we take for granted.

Its used to employ dentists, doctors, nurses, pharmacists, surgeons, anaesthetists, physiotherapists, and all the other ists you can posibly imagine, as well as premises for all these people to practice in, as well as research into diseases etc.

Gonna have a whinge about the NHS were ya? :p

Sorry cheekynMDM had you read the OP then you would note it is nothing to do with having a go at the NHS its more about why and where this money goes to and who does know where it goes!Not just on the NHS.

When I started work many years ago part of the reason for paying NHI stamps was for many services from NHS to State Pensions and also the service now coming under the DWP which is for the many benefits available. Many of the benefit services are being drastically overhauled so some claimants will get no support etc. With this reduction will there be a reduction in the contribution rate to ofset this?

I am in no way political, and i really dont know where the money goes; but to know that if i am ill or injured it will get fixed / cured for free for me is worth every penny I pay.

I have lived in places where before they give you pain relief they check you can pay for it !

Why do people keep saying it's free - it's not free at all, you have to pay into the system to benefit from unless, unless you're a serial scrounger in which case you let everyone else pay into it and still get it for free.

Scrap the NHS and let everyone determine their own levels of healthcare, and if you can't afford it - or choose not to - then tough, your choice, get a fookin job or pay for healthcare!

For "The Ring Wraith" when you fall off your motorcycle (or seriously ill) you have had all your 'free' treatment but are not in a position to work or even worse you are unable to work through injuries or health, How do you intend to survive? or get a pension should you reach the required age?

In my view the NHS is the only thing now that still makes Great Britain Great.

There is no other place on this planet that can boast that every citizen from the bottom of the ladder of social class all the way to the top can get the same level of health care at no extra cost.

I see your point and 100% agree with you about scroungers, but it not that simple!

For instance, my sister in law has just been royaly screwed over by her ex.( He cleared bank accounts and has done a runner with his plaything)

She has 4 kids including a 4mth old and for now is surviving on benefits. She has always worked in the past but how on earth would she now afford to pay up if something happened to her or her kids before she could find another job??

If only we had some sort of system to out the real scroungers...

National Health Insurance??? it's a new one on me I always thought it was National Insurance. It funds state pensions, dole money for those that have paid enough contributions or it used to an also helps to fund the NHS but most the money for that comes out of the other taxes you pay.

There's also plenty without children!

There is a place for benefits. I myself claimed them for a year when I split with my ex. What gets me is when people moan they are not enough! I ALWAYS had money left over at the end of the week, I was just careful how it was spent.

I think once you are on benefits you should not get any extra help if you have even more children after that... it's just taking the piss.

I was fishing in Florida recently and got chatting to some guys on the Pier about health care etc. They were saying what a bad name the NHS has over there.

One guy then told me he paid nearly $800 a month for the family health insurance and that he had cut himself with his fishing knife the month before. The bill for 3 stitches and half an hour in the hospital was over $2000.

I made my mind up that day to never complain about our benefit/health system again

....... i worked all my life had a major acident and broke my back does that make me a scrounger cos i get benefits now and i never can work i have to pay for my percriptions and my dentist with out the nhs i dont think i could of got though it.... and the people that piss me off is the people saying the look at u and u can see them thinking the nothing up with u cos i got a blue badge and walk on crutches and one guy said the fook all up with him one day and i got out the car and draged him though the window that was stress releaf for me and his face was a piture the are some knobs out there

This is exactly the reason it should never be privatised! If those who are not happy with the nhs stopped complaining about it they might realise that Britain also has a number of private hospitals - go and use them!!

But something has to be done about the abuse of the system I certainly agree with that. The trouble being with everything this government is doing it seems that a huge number of genuine people are the ones being punished

No... I think you totally missed the point I was making.

It's people already claiming benefits that continue to have more and more children when they don't work, meaning the tax payers continue to pay more and more to the same families that keep getting bigger and bigger while the working people pay for them.

To the person saying that it's punishing the children... not really, parents should take the view that they should support their own children and not expect others to do so.

It's the view that oh well we'd better keep paying them more and more because think of the poor kids attitude that has got the benefit system in such a mess and leaves it so open to abuse.

I know many people cannot help that they need support from benefits, I don't have a problem with that one bit, it's the attitude of "we'll just keep having more and more kids cos we can't be arsed working and get more and more benefits and a bigger house for free".

People should have it ingrained in them that they pay for what they want in this life and not expect others to pay for them.

NI pays for people currently in need. It is a myth that you are paying forward for your own care. Your future care is dependent on how you decided to vote and how you think the system should be run.

For those wanting to end the NHS and ensuring it is totally privatised then start using the private system and see how many times you are referred back to the NHS. You will also lose pensions and benefits. I hope you never need any of these 'services'.

The reality is that we are dependent on future generations agreeing to pay this tax (yes, it is a tax) in order for us to get something back from the system if we need it.

Apart from the health service I have not been able to access anything else from the system. Does that makes me want to stop paying in? No, because I know others do benefit from my contributions.

It is those working the system that are not getting caught by these so called assessments who are the real scroungers, There are legitimate reasons to support those going through a relationship breakdown but its the genuine ones who are being penalised so yet again things are not being done in the interest of those in need.

Caping payments for families by not encouraging extra income through breeding might help.
