Is everyone entitled to an opinion?

Is everyone entitled to an opinion? The Internet seems to think so. I was never taught this fact in school. Is this a new idea? I've heard many opinions that are offensive, nasty and downright criminal. Is it a person's right to have these opinions anyway? Regardless of their content?

I'm interested to hear everyone's opinions on the matter. Humour fully intended there and encouraged in your comments. Intellectual musings very welcome too.

Of course everyone us entitled to their opinion, even if it's wrong. Nobody has to pay any attention to other people's options.

Some opinions when expressed are illegal. Are we still entitled to them? Where does this entitlement come from?

Everyone is entitled to an opinion. But they aren't entitled to always express it without consequence and certainly aren't automatically entitled to express it through someone else's medium either.

Yes everyone can have an opinion. Just like the saying, opinions are like arseholes, everyone has one.

Nobody should force their opinion though. And you shouldn't have to listen to their opinions.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion but they shouldn't be shocked if they face ridicule if it's not a popular opinion. The consequence of having an opinion is very different to having an opinion itself

I cringe when I hear "have the right" these days. Mainly because the people who claim it are people who are, quite frankly... fucking selfish skidmarks of humans who are deliberately awkward for the sake of it or some validating power kick.

As for opinions, I'm all for sharing providing they can give me a balanced reason, not some bullshit they read on the back of matchbox that got muddled up in translation

Yes, everyone has the right to express their opinions, unless it is derogatory, insulting or inflammatory.

But with that comes with the right for others to challenge those opinions... And you can choose to listen or not.

Free speech should always be allowed, right or wrong, society as we know will fall apart when that fails, there can’t be a situation where people are being cancelled out because they don’t fit into somebody else’s thinking, you me everyone should be allowed to be listened to, if you believe it to be wrong then acknowledge they have expressed their opinion and walk away, unless you are David Dickinson then you will be largely ignored from the get go

There is a problem here though. If we take illegal opinions (inciting violence etc) and put that to one site. Who then decides what opinions are right and wrong? People with your opinion may be in power now but will they always be?

Take for example something like gay rights. Go back to the 1950s and argue for gay rights and you could have ended up in jail as they were the wrong and abhorrent opinions at the time.

If any of you ever get a chance listen to Ira Glasser speak about freedom of speech. Absolutely fascinating and I must say he changed my opinions on somethings.

Actually that's another point. I would also argue that if your opinion is unchangeable, even in the face of better data, then its not an opinion any more.

Everyone entitled but that’s not a defence fit being an awful human being

Lots of isms hide behind opinion

I’m not racist, it’s just my opinion

I’m not sexist. It’s just my opinion

The idea that everyone’s allowed an opinion and you shouldn’t be offended by them is the last hurdle of defence for anyone with prejudices

The old adage of " If you don't have anything nice to say then say nothing at all" is a load of bull because nodding and agreeing with what everyone else says without challenge will never change anything. Entitlement to an opinion is one thing but just because it's a popular opinion doesn't mean it's right.

It’s important to understand the difference between an opinion and a call to action

Opinion : all (race) are stupid

Call to action : so they shouldn’t be given jobs

It’s all an opinion, but the 2nd part is a call to action that could hurt people. That’s where you cross the line in my books

I pretty much agree with you. I'm just exploring an idea. Some opinions are illegal tho. Are we still entitled to them then? If they are against the law?

What opinions are illegall?

Some children need sexual attention. An opinion convicted paedos seem to hold. At least the ones I've seen on documentaries.

Yeah but they are not in prison or been convicted because of an opinion

But because of acts they have done

I think they would be arrested if they formed a Facebook group that expressed that opinion. No?

If it was just a facebook group talking about it probably not, no. I doubt it would be around long though.

If they started sharing CP through it then yeah that would be illegal

Are racist opinions posted online not considered hate crimes too?

Yeah they are. But i dont think calling somone racist slurs on facebook is the same as having an opinion. You have acted on that opinion to be a dick. Its not exactly the same as the peado example

"The old adage of " If you don't have anything nice to say then say nothing at all" is a load of bull because nodding and agreeing with what everyone else says without challenge will never change anything. Entitlement to an opinion is one thing but just because it's a popular opinion doesn't mean it's right.

If you don't have anything nice to say... is talking about people being nasty not people disagreeing with an idea. You can disagree without being nasty. I think anyway

Nice is subjective so if everyone confined themselves to only saying nice things, sychophancy would reign supreme. "

I argued tooth and nail with Nora and Rose today. I think you'll find both of them would say I had been nice and polite at all times. At least, I bloody hope so

Your rights to express your opinion need to be balanced against others rights to not be threatened or attacked , this is his rights work.

Until very recently you had rights to hold any view and not express it publicly but in recent times thought crime is now punishable so be careful what you think or discuss privately , it can land you in jail

Yep, the laws which protect people from hate speeches and radicalisation, along with discrimination laws in national and local policy to workplace policies, code of conduct, anti bullying to mention just a few

I was going to lead off with "when I want your opinion, I'll tell you what it is", but in the spirit of the thread...

Part of the problem is about who holds the opinion; if I'm just me to whom about 4 people actually listen, I can pretty much think and say what I like. But if I'm, say Donald Trump, Elon Musk or Kim Kardashian, the audience for my opinion is wildly different.

Equally, holding an opinion may just make me wrong. Proselytising my opinion potentially makes me fall foul of the law (free speech be damned).

I can’t imagine anyone would think that a valid topic for debate isn’t secretly a racist. This type is racial superiority pseudoscience has a history in genocides , far worse than someone just disliking a race even without knowing why (ignorance) , but trying to justify it with fake science is very dangerous

I'm interested to hear everyone's opinions on the matter. Humour fully intended there and encouraged in your comments. Intellectual musings very welcome too.

Of course everyone us entitled to their opinion, even if it's wrong. Nobody has to pay any attention to other people's options.

Cal

What about the opinion that black people are not as intelligent as white? It's been said many times...

If that was said to an individual it would would slander, if it was expressed openly to others it would come under hate speech and racism laws

I can’t imagine anyone would think that a valid topic for debate isn’t secretly a racist. This type is racial superiority pseudoscience has a history in genocides , far worse than someone just disliking a race even without knowing why (ignorance) , but trying to justify it with fake science is very dangerous

Agreed, all genocides I would imagine.

Someone once said to me "you can't lock people up cause they don't like black people". I said "I think you should be able to if they go around saying it". I think that law is in place now so you can. Not really sure."

Not in America

I believe everyone is entitled to an opinion.

Many of my own opinions have changed due to someone else's opinion/viewpoint.

I believe all opinions should be listened to, and challenged when clearly wrong/dangerous.

The problem arises when someone's opinions are so deeply entrenched they are unable to see the path they're treading.

It's clearly evidenced minute by minute on two other forums here.

Social media doesn't help foster good critical thinking, confirmation bias is a thing. Cults recruit from people like this.

Some people's opinions are easily swayed.

I'll happily debate an opinion. Something I think our higher seats of learning don't encourage anymore, or maybe less so than in my day, is to hold the opposing view. I'm also happy to change my opinion in the face of greater/better/higher learning/information.

Two ears, one mouth. Should be used in that ratio. Unfortunately social media denies that premise.

IMHO obvs.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and always has been regardless of when you went to school. How people choose to act upon your opinion is the more important issue.

The only difference the internet/technology has brought is the ability for people to voice their opinions, and to some extent seek validation from others, as well as make it easier for like minded folk across the world to connect with others that share their points of view.

Of course everyone should have an opinion. Whether it is actually their own, or just regurgitated, whether they can justify with a rationale or just spout bollocks, it doesn't really matter. It will teach you most of what you need to know about them, which is invaluable.

I would say that as soon as something is able to form an opinion, then because there is no way to suppress the formulation of that opinion, it is entitled to make it.

The UN considers it a human right to be able to have an opinion without fear of discrimination.

In England (and also Scotland but different rules) you're not entitled to some opinions.

If you express your opinion on certain issues it could be prosecuted as a hate crime or recorded as a hate incident. Largely these apply to protected characteristics such as disability or race. 120,000 "non-crime hate incidents" were recorded between 2014-19. You are not informed if one is recorded against you but it will show up in a criminal background check.

Opinions are thoughts, so, we aren't given permission to have thoughts, we just have them.

Whether we should express those opinions or not is another matter and a wide ranging subject.

The ability to debate peacefully would be a good start.

The important thing to remember with can be done is everything has a consequence. Whether I belive you have a right to an opinion or not is irrelevant, you are capable of forming an opinion and capable of expressing it. What you can't do is choose the consequences for expressing it.

I think the issue we have nowadays is confusion over what exactly constitutes an offensive opinion. For many it's simply an opinion which differs from theirs. Similarly, "bigot" now appears to mean "someone whose opinion is different".

The correct meaning of the word “bigot” is pretty clear, but I agree that it is sometimes used too freely.

The line between what is deemed offensive and not offensive is constantly evolving, and that happens through sharing opinions, debate, legislation etc

The trouble as I see it is that too often these days opinions are mistaken for, or taken as, fact by one group with an agenda, especially with respect to science. You only have to look at what has happened the in the last 2 years. It's clearly fuelled by social media. The Trump era of 'alternative facts' is still here and getting worse.

Yes everyone is entitled to an opinion.

The problem comes in expressing it.

There are ways of expressing opinions without being hurtful.

Personally I think opinions should be expressed as I and everyone else is doing here. That way those opinions can be challenged. If they are derogatory then challenging them may just change that persons opinion.

Well that’s my opinion anyway. Feel free to challenge it.

Mr

You don’t believe in rights? I do "

Not at all. For instance who would I speak to when my right to liberty is curtailed by a tree falling on my legs and trapping me? Rights were invented in order to improve the way people are treated but I believe the invention could have been better. Instead of giving people universal rights we should have given them universal responsibilities. We have the responsibility to treat people fairly, to uphold law etc etc. Far too many people bang on about their rights which we as a species have invented - very few consider their responsibilities to others.

Of course, the fact I don't believe in them in no way affects everyone else and the world will carry on with enough people acting as though the fiction is real to make it so. I don't believe the piece of plastic in my wallet with a picture of the queen on has any real intrinsic value either but enough people do that I can act as though I believe it aswell.
