hi , just had a quote to replace a electric shower at £375 the old one has stopped working he said regs have changed in the last 5 yrs

my question is,

have regs changed that much and is the price over the top ta

I hope not, mine is leaking so I need to strip it and hope I can repair it, this is when I get the courage to actually do it. I also work with quite a few electricians but trying to get one to come and sort, no chance.

probably the sort of price most plumbers would charge, for that sort of price i would check local colleges that do plumbing courses, my work is sending me on a five day course soon, cost £425 at the end of it you should be abble to handle any job in your own home including instaling a full bathroom suite and a shower, check tradeteacher.co.uk

Definitely being ripped off, I replaced my own for just the cost of a new shower unit (about £125) If I can do it anyone can

You should always get a few quote anyway.

You might find he installing RCD and new cable etc, ask what is in price etc.

as side line he should issue electrical cert/ minor work dependent on what is done, also bathroom is covered under P cert rules.

Make sure if you're doing it yourself that you get the same kilowatt shower,.. power should be marked on the shower unit .. after that its easy to replace them.

In terms of plumbing skills, all you need to do to fit a new shower is tighten a compression joint.

If it's an electric/power shower, ask a sparky to see if they will do it cheaper.... but even the eccie bit isn't difficult as long as you know what size the cable is.

It's a phrase used by tradesmen to convince folk who they think haven't got a clue, that the price they have quoted is the norm.

Not a plumbing matter, but I had the same phrase quoted to me when I tried to find a builder to install my log burning stove for a sensible price...Being single and female, I've learned to question everything I'm told and quoted by tradesmen, as 99 times out of a 100 they are try to rip you off

As long as your changing like for like, I'm assuming it's an electric shower, the shower supply is up to ratings and has it's own separate fuse/rcd and is separetly switched your fine! He's fed you a bit of a porky
