Pioneer of the term Rainbow nation.

Every time I hear that name it reminds me of Peace for the human race. RIP

Sorry to hear it, i didn't know. In my head I tended to rank him along side people like Kofi Annan, or Ban ki Moon..etc

One of those individuals of seemingly endless patience.

Extraordinary circumstances bring forth extraordinary people, and he was one of them.

If you haven't read it "rabble rouser for peace" is very good.

RIP

A true colossus,a great man who will always be a huge inspiration to all...lucky enough to attend a lecture from him when he visited London. Well worth reading his books on forgiveness.

I don’t share my personal life on here at all but, I had the great honour of meeting him in 2012. I’ve supported one of his numerous charities and was invited to an event at St Pauls Cathedral in the Crypt.

He gave a talk and was introduced by Terry Waite (another colossus and an extremely tall man). At the end of the event, Terry Waite announced the His Grace would not be taking pictures as he had literally just arrived from the airport prior to the event. There were roughly 70 people and my 2 teenage children were the only young people there.

I wanted a picture of His Grace as he was leaving. I tried to make my way to the end of the pew away from the central aisle, I turned back to tell the children to wait and there was Desmond Tutu with his arms around my kids!

I have 3 framed pictures on my wall of Desmond Tutu, his arms wrapped around my children’s shoulders, me (with the biggest grin you’ve ever seen, and Terry Waite towering over us.

These were the only pictures he took that night. He was incredibly gracious and apparently had made a bee line for my 2 as soon as a closing prayer had been finished.
