Worse than...

I once did a endurance, off road run, part of which involved being neck deep in an ice cold, pitch black forest pond, whilst trying to run across a submerged beam without falling off. One of the female competitors announced (and I quote directly) that "this is worse than childbirth."

So, having done something worse than give birth, I feel well placed to ask what's the most unpleasant thing you've done voluntarily.

A charity walk, up a fell, in 65mph winds. Of course we got near the top and it was unsafe to go any further so we went back down and up another - smaller "fell". Much much steeper than the first.

I love walking but I need it to be enjoyable to love it.

It was for a good cause but that's the only thing that forced me to carry on.

The list is extensive…

In terms of physical unpleasantness I’d say having to swim across in icy harbour in January, wearing only overalls and combat boots

Went Christmas shopping to a market across town in thick snow, using buses.

Never again.

The Detective Pikachu one?"

No idea. This was probably 20 years ago or more. I actually fell asleep, not something I ever imagined I'd do at the pictures

That's a whole new level kink.

Sounds vile.

We were frozen, and I couldn't feel my feet.

I actually felt like crying waiting for the bus home.

It was when Pokemon first became popular in UK. I've still got all the original cards somewhere and some my relatives in Japan sent over. I wonder if they're worth anything

Hell Runner by any chance?

For me it was being a scare actor. Horrendous job and I’ve done infantry tours of duty….

It was funnily enough. (in the sense of not being funny at all)

And I like your scale of reference.

I did. I've never experienced anything worse than childbirth. But then I don't sign myself up for endurance events

You've obviously never stood on a plug in the middle of the night either.

Yeah that pond wasn’t my favourite part. Think I just ended up swimming out. Couldn’t feel my feet for a fair bit afterwards.

Like running on stubs.

When I got out it felt like I was trying to run using someone else's legs.

Was carrying out some fault diagnoses on a control panel at work once.. cut a corner and didn’t isolate the power correctly. The back of my hand brushed one of the 450v terminals… I literally felt my brain rattle in head!

Sit through my mother-in-law's 50th birthday meal. My husband had a great time ignoring everyone apart from his siblings. The birthday girl was annoyed and annoying as she was being ignored. I got stuck talking to her sort of boyfriend who in his ridiculously strong Scottish accent told me all about the film's he loved (starring Jean Claude Van Damme mostly) and then went into a story that I just smiled and nodded at as I couldn't understand him. He then repeated it and I worked out he was telling me about the time he woke up and found his wife had had a stroke in the night and was dead next to him.

Oh yeah, and the whole time I had to keep excusing myself to go to the toilet as I was going through a miscarriage.

A bloody unpleasant evening.

Can laugh about it now though

I'd need more than a brew. Probably a car or at least a bike.
