Do you think it's an outdated concept with practically everywhere being open on Sundays and Bank Holidays?

Grieves me to pay taxi fare or walk to work because I start before the buses are running when I've paid for a monthly bus pass.

Yeah good point. Suppose it might be because the low number of passengers make it not worth running the service.
