Oddly I quite like Jaywick. It's a vibe for sure. I hung out in the 'Never Say Die' for a few pints and found the locals surprisingly welcoming of a random who was up from Devon. I don't think it is classed as a holiday destination thes days though, most people there are permanent residents as far as I can tell.

"Tunisia. Never ever ever to return. Ever! "

I was just about to mention that one. Went on a cheap off season package deal with the ex. People were generally quite pleasant (it helps that I speak fluent French and a decent bit of Arabic) but there was no getting away from the fact that the whole place was strewn with rubbish, they weren't very keen on foreigners wandering about the place outside of the hotel compounds and there was obviously a heightened security alert going on at the time, the whole place seemed very edgy. Then a matter of a day or two after our visit there was a museum attack in which a few tourists were killed, which was alarming as we had almost gone there ourselves but decided to do a different trip instead. Also the food was pretty awful just about everywhere we went, I know it's a developing country and people aren't that well off but compared to Moroccan or Egyptian cuisine it's sadly lacking.

Yes some are but it all depends where you go, what you do and what you are looking from a holiday. Some places in Portugal are amazing, out of the tourist area. Spain has great places too. Some of the Greek Isles are just awesome and best hospitality I ever experienced. Not to mention the food which, as a bit of a foodie, just love. You just need to get away from the tourist areas I think. My opinion anyway.

I guess it's what you want from a holiday

My ex was happy to sit round a pool or on a hotel beach for a fortnight so 'resort' hotels suited her fine

I prefer to get up and mooch about so any destination that is hotel based for 'security' reasons just isn't for me

My current partner point blank refuses to travel anywhere where being LGBT is illegal or culturally unacceptable, so that takes a hell of a lot of the globe off the travel map

We holiday in our camper so just drive on by if a place is rubbish.

The only disappointing holiday I remember was Butlin's. I worked there when I was younger and thought if would be fun to take our children when they were little. All the nice parts seemed liked they'd been replaced. Self service restaurants, more theme park, less entertainers. Was nothing like I remembered it.

One of the ones I worked at was Skegness and even that was good fun back then.

We're currently in Tenerife. There's lots of Tenerife beyond the Las Américas and Los Cristianos bit. We spent most of today up a mountain and in the gorgeous pine forest. Currently listening to the sea crashing against the harbour wall and not a nightclub in sight (or sound). We'd never stay in the main tourist resorts either....

"Jamaica. We were genuinely frightened driving through Kingston. Couldn’t leave the hotel at all."

I'll 2nd Jamaica, we didn't stay in a hotel, so had to venture out from our house everyday.

Constantly got hassled when out and some places charged us much more than they should of!

"Morocco.

Glad I went but didn't like the fact that you are virtually a prisoner in the hotel complex, venture out at your peril.

Harassment literally the second you walk out of the hotel plus husband got very very sick."

I love Morocco, they are like puppies compared to Turkey, if they get on your nerves just pretend to be foreign, we just make up a language and it confuses the hell out of them.

Other than New York & Brooklyn , I’d happily never set foot in the states again , awful people, boring as fuck place

"Egypt, the people are horrid

There's good and bad everywhere

I've been to both those countries and found that the majority of regular people are lovely but there's a substantial element who simultaneously don't respect or like dealing with foreigners but also see them as their main or only source of income, and they tend to colour ones impression of the place as a whole.

That mixed reception you refer to is it a good recipe for a holiday destination. There are plenty of holiday destinations where visitors are genuinely welcome rather than openly resented.

That’s a pity. I absolutely love Paris, used to visit there about 6 times a year when a friend of mine lived there. "

I agree, I was also lucky enough to be shown the real Paris by local friends in the past and loved it too. I do understand though why might not be for everyone if you only follow the tourist guide.

Might be why I enjoyed it too, mixing with people who lived there.

I’d imagine people might think London was shit too if all they did was go to a couple of tourist attractions and then get pissed in Covent Garden.

Like when people visit my home town of Dublin and just spend the weekend getting pissed in temple bar ... bit more to the city than that.

Agree about both. Love London as know it quite well but then most of my friends don't and most hate it. As for Dublin again have been many time as have friends and absolutely love it but then again never do the tourist stuff except perhaps the famous cake shop that I could not resist

Cairo was horrific from the moment I stepped off the bus

Couldn't find my hotel and asked at another hotel reception for directions. They claimed they'd never heard of it but said they had a room available. It was very late at night so I agreed. Next morning when I checked out the same guy gave me directions to the hotel I had booked and knew exactly where it was, about 50 metres away. That pretty much set the tone for my whole stay

Then the hotel where I was supposed to be staying arranged taxi rides to the pyramids but said me and my friend couldn't share a taxi and had to travel separately

Every day was a struggle to keep ourselves from being fleeced. Couldn't wait to leave

Best story I hear on Egyptian ripoffs was a tourist asking if he could have a photo of his wife with a camel. The lads were very helpful and said she could have a photo ON the camel, and helped her up, refusing the tourist’s offer of 5 or 10 dollars. He took the pics, thanked the lads and said right, can we get her down now please. “Yes sir; that will be 50 dollars”.

Ha! Reminds me when I rode with my young daughter up to the pyramids at Gisa on camels. When we got to the top the guy asked for more money to let us down.

I took out my water had a sip, sat back comfortably and said "No, we will sit up here all afternoon and wait till you let us down. You will earn nothing and when the police come they will tell you to let us down." Both camels were told to sit immediately.

I never thought will go but did once out of season and parts were really pleasant, especially around old town and there was hardly any tourists, just spanish people local or visiting themeselves. I was surprised but enjoyed it and there are dsome very nice areas to visit only a few miles away too. I am not saying is somewhere I can't wait to go again but not too bad at all out of season.

"Also dubai, hated that place with a passion... theres no soul at all its just frustratingly terrible. "

... and then there’s the fact that the place runs on poorly paid workers, in dangerous conditions. The way workers in the building industry are treated is shocking. Hard to stomach sitting in a gaudy luxurious hotel, knowing the way the builders were treated. Thousands of deaths on construction sites.

I know some locals, and they justify the treatment of these workers, mainly from the Indian subcontinent, by saying that before the UAE got rich, the boot was on the other foot and it was the locals who were treated like shit.

I agree about Jamaica, went with the ex for silver wedding, when out of the site for a meal the hotel sent four ( yes 4 ) armed guys with us for security, if you went on a trip we were told to remove all jewellery including wedding and engagement rings, watched and chains, hotel management said “ they’ll cut your fingers off to get your rings “ , never again

It's most definitely not standard in Jamaica. We've never heard of anyone coming back with fingers missing. It sounds like an expensive hotel!

I didn’t enjoy Dublin, I walked into a pub and my two friends had gone in and upto the bar just before me and everybody noticeably just stopped and stared at me. They said it was like that pub scene from an American Werewolf in London, and it was!

Really made me feel self conscious and uncomfortable, and left a lasting (bad) impression.
