Is this actually a thing? Or is it just something people say to step away from an argument?

I think it’s ok to agree to disagree. We aren’t going to agree on everything, and everyone is entitled to their opinion.

yeah there

Not so much over evidence provable facts but over opinion and stance yes. It'd be boring if we were all clones that could always find a way to agree.

Used when you know your not gonna get through to the person your speaking too

Or when you don’t actually have a solid point to back up so it’s easier to disengage

Somewhere In The Ether…

I believe that it is invariably uttered when an overt ‘stalemate’ is encountered i.e neither side are ever likely to budge in their dogmatic stance.

It serves to diffuse a potential escalation into a full on heated argument.

Sometimes it's something I say because I can't be bothered to argue about something, and I don't want to come across as an idiot. This is especially true of those who argue science with me.

Other times I can see we both have a point, but we both won't change our opinions.

So by agreeing to disagree, are we just consolidating our own position, which is essentially "I'm right and you're wrong?"

It's being civil and accepting both opinions. You can disagree with people even if you get on

.

I tend to use it when

- I value and respect another person and don't want to upset them.

- I'm bored of the discussion and have realized the other person is as stubborn as I am on a matter.

- When I've grown tired of attempting to debate and want to seek intellectual stimulation elsewhere.

- because as much as I think I'm right, I can respect someone else's ability to be right at the same time. And to their views.

I don't agree I think people have different perspectives and that's not wrong or right just different.

No. I just know nobody ever agrees with me. Or at least not that they'd admit

I always thought it means I don't agree with your opinion, but at the same time this debate is going nowhere. So let's just not waste time on it.

"I think it’s ok to agree to disagree. We aren’t going to agree on everything, and everyone is entitled to their opinion. "

I agree. Although it does seem tougher these days. A consequence of the internet and social media perhaps? And the decline of a good old debate in a good old pub!

Agree to disagree

Meaning:

I'm right, you're wrong, but I still wanna fuck you, so I'm going to let it go

Of course you can.

I can disagree with someone but respect their view as their own, it's just different to mine based on our own experiences.

One thing that will fuck me off though is to attempt to invalidate my experiences because they differ. Absolutely challenge them, don't fucking dare try to invalidate them.

There's a thing called Godwins Rule which involves one party resorting to name calling when they see an argument getting away from them. It initially referred to calling the other person a Nazi but that has many modern day substitutions and was a sign that they had lost the argument.

Agreeing to disagree is more about someone not wanting to continue a discussion.

I don't like it. I prefer to say that is a very interesting opinion and thank you for sharing it with me.

That way the conversation is closed and we can move on positively x

I get on well with people with opposing opinions. I like debate and I like to hear the reasons for their views. Sometimes it can get heated so I sometimes have to agree to disagree.

Let's save mine and your time because you won't convince me to agree and I won't convince you either and I don't even want to. Go your own way (of thinking) and stop poking at mine. That kind of thing?

Maybe not on here, but I've said it and had others say it to me, but it's never been said as a negative, as usually been with friends and/or family. Generally when discussing sports, politics, religion and other things.

I think it's okay for people to disagree, as long as there is mutual respect. Sometimes, people can then learn things

Edinburgh (She/Her)

A term used constantly by me in the work place!!

The boss and me never see eye to eye. Arguments a plenty.

I learnt only recently to stop talking when another person fails to listen.

He is the boss he doesn't listen. So it's a "whatever, agree to disagree". No argument. Move on..

2 months down the line. It will change to my way of thinking.

I'll wait til he decides that he made the idea up himself and take the credit.

Looking forward to when he moves on...

Personally, I think it's a thing. To me. It's the point where you can recognise someone else's argument/views but don't necessarily agree with them yourself.

It's the old Devil vs Angel on your shoulders.

Depends on the person, sometimes I can say this just to shut them up if they go on a never ending rant about something we will never agree on. But in general, the world would be boring if we all agreed on everything. So why I might not agree with someone on something, I still respect what they have to say.
