"Big outcry this week with the proposed first octupus farm breeding octupses for food. Anybody a fan of this ? Can’t see an issue with this. Is it any different from any other forms of farming? " Octopi have been classed as “sentient” by some branches of science. There is generally an issue that regardless of whether they are farmed or not, should we be eating a species that displays emotional intelligence albeit without the ability to communicate with us.

" “ The level of awareness that has been witnessed first-hand is to be recognised in UK law through an amendment to the Animal Welfare (Sentience) Bill. The change has come after a team of experts sifted through more than 300 scientific studies and concluded that octopuses were "sentient beings" and there was "strong scientific evidence" that they could experience pleasure, excitement and joy - but also pain, distress and harm.” I’m not sure that cows and sheep have been classified as such.

Of course I’ll take your word over “300 scientific studies” herd animals breed because of genetic imperative, I cannot say whether or not bulls do it for pure enjoyment or to increase the likelihood of their genetic legacy, but they (apparently) do not warrant classification as “sentient”

Humans are one of a very few species that farms other species for food and the only species to do so that is capable of tailoring the methods used to reduce suffering. Nature is full of examples of predatory behaviour that is bound to cause distress and suffering but we alone have the ability to consuder how we can reduce this. I have no objection in principle to farming octopi as long as it is done in a way that reduces the level of stress on the animals to the same as their native environment (where they are also taken as prey, killed and eaten by other creatures). However I find the way this company is refusing disclose its methods very worrying though I understand there is a large commercial advantage to doing so. I'm also concerned about the sourcing of food to feed the octopi, our oceans are already being plundered in unsustainable ways to feed not just people directly but indirectly and far less efficiently through the ever growing aquaculture industry. It's all very well touting the environmental benefits of farmed octopi saving the wild ones but slightly less convincing when a) it is used as a way to increase the overall amount eaten and b) this increase is fed by stripping creatures from wild habitats and feeding them to the farmed animals. "I do wonder what could be the outcome of herding these buggers together.. If they are as intelligent as it is claimed they will join forces foreshore" Intelligence and mass gatherings mean nothing. Millions gather with sophisticated communication networkers daily. And spend it talking about who’s going to win a dancing competition or whether the size of tits or penis makes a difference to global warming! I sincerely doubt a few octopi are going to cause a rift in the space and time! They might start an interesting thread by grown men in the south of england can’t afford shoes though

"Isn't it better to farm than to take from the wild? I don't know the answer to that." If you were meat for aliens, would you rather live free as a human until they captured you or be kept from birth in an artificial environment and impregnated so that you will produce young and milk then have your young taken from you and then be killed when you can no longer produce young or milk or if you get ill and costly ? You could be one of the lucky ones that is blindfolded at birth and bled every so often to keep your flesh nice and pale for those that pay big bucks to eat tender white baby meat... It's good to have a choice
