Afternoon all,

I was driving home last night and as the title stated my steering wheel light came up. I manged to get home but the steering became very heavy, jittery and heard a sort of grinding noise at one point. Before taking it the garage I'm thinking it could be low steering fluid. It is a BMW. Any advice would be helpful.

Thanks

Could be any number of things. If you're asking the forum then I presume you aren't mechanically minded (at least with cars) so get it to the experts

It’s a shame you’re only for curves, you need to stick to the straights for a while

It could be a number of things. However, with modern diagnostics on cars these days, the fault can be identified easily once it's plugged in to the computer. Sounds like power steering fault.

No, I am not a mechanic but I like too save money and if its an easy fix I am "mechanically minded" enough to do it myself.

BMW you say?

It means you attempted to put your indicators on to turn a corner and the car objected!

I am not a mecanic but in my experience of similar events a lack of fluid results in heavy steering.

Not heard grinding sounds before. Perhaps the hydraulic pump is no good anymore? Best go to a main dealer to get it checked. Steering is quite important.

Having owned a BMW once I suggest a call to the IMF before you go to the garage Tell them you are going as otherwise the immense cost of repair will destabilise the international money markets.

Checking the fluid level would be my first port of call.

If that is the problem it straight forward enough to top up ( with correct fluid).

But the bigger question would be why has the fluid level dropped.

It’s low fluid level cause by a leak, If not that then an electrical fault but highly unlikely the latter

Check the fluid level and top up of required but whatever you do do not drive the car with the steering overly heavy as you will be running the power steering pump dry (no fluid means no lubricant) and the repair for a new pump isn't going to be cheap on and car let alone a BMW.

Find a specialist for a BMW rather than going to the main dealers, your bank will thank you for it.

Seeing as how it’s a BMW and you have never seen it before, you probably used the indicators by accident and it was the indicator tell tell light lol

How old is the BMW? I would be a bit concerned if its loosing power steering fluid. But check it first then take it to a BMW specialist unless it's under warranty

There's every chance on a BMW that is electric steering not hydraulic so may have no pump or fluid just a motor. There's honestly so many things it could be and without even knowing what type of steering you have there's no way of telling.

Power steering pump drive belt if the fault appeared suddenly. If the car has shown signs of oil leakage I may the the power steering leaking oil causing the issues.
