The wonder of sport is that in moments, anything can happen.. From the underdog winning.. Like James buster Douglas putting iron Mike tyson on his backside... To cheating.. Like Ben Johnson breaking the 100m record to win Olympic gold all hopped up on scoobie snacks... To close finishes like steve Redgrave and the gb team winning a 2km race by millimetres... To emotional moments like Derek redmonds leg giving out in the olympic 400m final only for his dad to carry him over the line... And to the officials making a horlicks of it like last weekends f1 gp where max beat Lewis courtesy of some involvement of the officials..

So... What stands out for you? What moments did you witness and think... My god I can't believe I've just seen that...

The Final.

Steve Davies against Dennis Taylor in 1985. It was the first time sport (don’t want arguments if snooker or darts are really sports) actually gripped me. Spoiler alert, that it went to the last ball of the final frame was magical.

There’s others from Motorcycle racing especially with Wayne Rainey and Kevin Schwantz or Carl Fogarty to boxing Benn v McClelland that had me on the edge of my seat.

But it’s the snooker that started it

Had to think hard about this one as I have watched many great spine tingling sporting moments and some ended in disappointment, but I will have to go for Andy Murray winning Wimbledon I was so nervous when he was close to winning pacing about leaving the room and watching with one eye etc. Absolutely fantastic and things like that is why so many love sport

Car looked a mess with no back or side windows but he drove like a demon, nobody could match him.

As the Finns fell by the wayside trying to real him in, he went on to take his first international victory.

Rangers winning the league in 1987 after a nine year drought.

The team local to me (Motherwell) winning an amazing Scottish Cup Final in 1991 was great.

Dennis Taylor beating Steve Davis on the black ball at the Crucible World Snooker final in 1985.

And the BDO darts final in the early 2000s between Wolfie Adams and Phil Nixon, who came back from 6-0 down to draw 6-6, then lose in the deciding set. Not brilliant darts but great drama.

I bet 1981 was unreal, I’d have loved to have seen Botham at his best. 2005 was different level, probably the greatest test series there has ever been. I was at Headingley in 2019 to see Stokes almost single-handedly win that test match against the Aussies. Some people say it’s boring but for me there’s nothing more dramatic than a hard fought test series…..chance would be a fine thing this winter

Carlos Sainz Sr loosing the 1998 world rally championship by 700 meters as his Toyota Corolla broke down. Tommi Makinen had retired during the rally so all Sainz had to do was finish with 3 or more points in order to be crowned that years Champion. Carlos was so angry he smashed his helmet through the back window of the car which was caught on camera.

2005 European Cup Final I couldn’t afford to go watched it with some friends in Liverpool at half time I listened to Andy Townsend when he said all over by half time 3-0 down by the time I got home it was 3-2 incredible final

Brett Lee collapsing after failing to hold Flintoff off and get the two runs needed in the ashes 2005. The moment AF (and before him SH) knelt next to Lee was inspired sportsmanship. Lees almost 2hrs at the crease may have gone unrewarded but not un-respected. That was a test game I was happy to be part of that crowd in the midlands
