I dont want to spend out on an ipod so what are the alternatives?

I'm not up on this stuff so any helpfull advice would be most appreciated.

I've looked on ebay and I've never heard of some of the names on there. I only want to put music on it, not interested in videos, and it's got to be easy to operate coz I'm just starting my senile phase I think

It depends what quality your music is. I don't mean how well they play their instruments... I mean how high quality you want your mp3 files to be.

It's all measured in bit rates. Typically you'll probably be looking at 192kbps minimum or ideally 256kbps... I find anything lower than that is noticeably inferior audibly and annoys me. If it's stuff I'm playing through speakers or monitors then I go for 320kbps minimum but off headphones then 256kbps will be good enough.

Assuming you're looking at those bit rates then an album will be anywhere between 100 - 200MB in size. There are 1024 MB in a GB so you're looking very approximately at anywhere between 40 & 80 albums depending upon what bit rate you choose.

Forgot to say... I like the Creative stuff too. Have had a number of them over the years.

You said you're not interested in watching videos on it which is fair enough but a screen is useful for navigating between albums and songs... it's very fiddly if you've got loads of albums on it and you've only got a tiny lcd display spanning a couple of lines. So unless you're only going to have a handful of songs on it then I'd recommend one with a screen where you can see at a glance what's playing, what's next, what volume it's playing at, how much battery is left, etc...

For what it is worth, iPods are expensive for a reason.. worth every penny. Particularly if you go for more of the system (mac, appleTV, iCloud etc). The further you go, the better it gets..... bit like sex!

Another thumbs up here for the Creative Zen range. Creative have a history in soundcards etc. for PCs so they really know their stuff when it comes to audio. I've had several Zens over the years and sound quality knocks yer iPods into the proverbial cocked hat, it has to be said.

That said, these days I just keep all my music on my phone, so hardly ever use a standalone music player (or sat-nav, etc. etc.!)

I don't keep mine on my phone as I've got way too much but I do find myself using my phone as the media player more and more.

I have a NAS which has got all my media (music, films, tv shows, etc...) on it. It's on my home LAN so is accessible throughout the house.

I have a media centre hooked up to my TV and speakers in the living room but for the rest of the house I have portable Bluetooth speakers which I pair to my phone. I then use Winamp (I'm on Android so don't know if you can get Winamp for iphone but itunes should work just as well) to connect via wifi to my NAS to play the music and Bluetooth to transfer it to the wireless speakers.

A couple of added benefits is that I can use the speakers as a hands free set if I get a phone call, and it also acts as a charger so it tops up my phone's battery whilst I'm listening to some tunes.

My Creative Zen turned 7 this year and the only problem I have is sometimes it goes to random if you skip a song but as I usually prefer it that way so I don't care! My ex's was a year or so older, had had 7 years of pretty much constant use, and only a few 'age' problems (such as having to press the screen to see it) then he decided to retire it. They're pretty much indestructible and I'd NEVER have an iPod after my favourite brick!

Get your George Foreman connected to that set up and you will be really rocking
