Ways to get rid of a cold quickly…?

Jump to newest

I feel like I’m ill every other week *cries*

Granted I know I definitely need to drink more water and I could probably cut out the Haribo and Parma Violets but generally I feel like I’m alright. I exercise and relatively healthy

How can I get rid of this cold in the next 24 hours?

Also, any advice on how to boost my immune system before I actually throw myself in front of a moving lorry, I’d be grateful…

Sadly, there ain’t no ‘getting rid’, until your immune system kicks its arse out.

There’s only management of symptoms.

Haven't got much advice, but sleep as much as you can. It's a powerful thing!

Doubt theres any scien e behind this, When I wanted to get rid of a cold virus I used to go to a sauna hot as I could stand and sit and sweat it out of me. Always worked for me.

Drink lots of fluids before and after

I always go for the natural herbs and spice remedies

I make a turmeric tea you can use the powder or root with 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper added. Same with ginger I find it really helps

there's no way to get rid of the cold quickly but you can do things from the list below to ease the symptoms.

1.resting

2.staying hydrated

3.using a clean air humidifier

4.using saline nasal spray or drops

5.inhaling steam from a bowl of hot

water, or in the shower

6.sucking throat lozenges to soothe a

sore throat

7.using honey to relieve a cough

Beechams flu plus work pretty well, but don't bother if you're wanting rid of it quickly to go out drinking as paracetamol and alcohol do not mix well in your body.

You have to immediately stop, got to bed, get up once per hour or 2 to make a pint of hot water with lemon and honey. Take 2 paracetamol every 4 hours , drink the water ,sleep graze on fresh oranges, bananas , strawberries, blueberries, drink, paracetamols, graze, sleep, drink…. 24-36 hours and you are ok to get up and just take it easy 1-2 days. It works

Thank you everyone! Yeah I guess it was wishful thinking to “get rid of it quickly” but I did try inhaling vicks for 15 minutes and the relief, can’t believe I’ve never done that before!

Sleep, heat, fluids, food, and most importantly *all* of the drugs. Don't be a hero about, smash all those decongestants and flu drinks into yourself

Twenty-four hours is wishful thinking though

I always sleep propped up on pillows when I have a cold. It might not shift it any faster but it keeps your sinuses open so you can sleep a little easier. (that's if you can sleep almost sat up)

So I find the first defense nasal sprays help. Apparently putting an onion on the bottom of your foot then put a sock on.

You need to sweat it out, so drink a potion of hot water, vinegar, honey and treacle, hot bath and off to bed with your bed socks on and two paracetamol hope you get well soon xx

For a run of the mill cold, sweat it out, it's horrible but definitely the quickest way to shift it. I've a dose three weeks now and it's not shifting, some people on here mentioned they had a six week dose. There's a bastard dose doing the rounds at the moment. Hopefully that's not the case with you

An old bloke said to me once, get The Peters Sisters.

Get into bed. One each side and one on top. Sweat it out.

Those beechams cold and flu tablets are pretty good at getting rid of the symptoms temporarily (the runny nose etc..)

Get some vitamin D supplements from a health shop.

Google ‘hot toddies’ works every time whiskey slice lemon honey and boiling water and down it as soon as you can bear the heat of it …. On a note to bump your immune system biggest thing is vitamin D but better to take a good quality multivitamin and not one of those cheap three quid supermarket jobbies, also diet and daylight help massively

You can't really get rid of it but some paracetamol and decongestants should help you feel better.

As for your immune system, vitamins, plenty of sleep and avoid stress.

You need to have a hot toddy. We swear by them.

Make a lemsip drink (half mug full) and mix in some honey, a little fresh orange juice and lots of whiskey. Heat it up in the microwave and drink whilst red hot. It'll make you sweat buckets but it works a treat.

Vicks first defence nasal spray! But you need to take it at the very first signs of a cold. It'll either stop it or reduce the severity. I swear by it. Cheaper versions are available.

If it's too late for that, cold and flu capsules are pretty good with phenylephrine in them, perks you up a bit.

Get well soon x

I'm no expert, and I appreciate research is limited, but I'm not certain that throwing yourself under a bus is proven to boost your immune system.

Be careful… if you live in Manchester or London at the moment if you have a runny nose and are feeling worn out, there is more than a fair chance it could be omicron rather than a cold (sorry to put a damper on things… take a LFT)

With symptoms it has to be a PCR, LFT is for those with no symptoms.

Agree with the above. I would get a PCR as loads of people have negative lateral flow but positive PCR. Omicron is everywhere at the moment.
