How do people make new friends in their 40s?

A lot of my friends and family are now married with children and it's getting really hard to do social activities without giving a month notice. Be great to find new like-minded friends

Well you could take up a hobby, that has a club or “space” associated with it.

I recently started riding again (nothing to do with my jodhpurs fetish) and I meet all sorts at the stables and have started going “hacking” with a little group (or whoever is about really).

You have to be a little bit brave to put yourself out there find something you are interested in doing that presents social opportunities.

It’s not easy, depending, where you live, but it is doable.

You have a useful tool at your finger tips right here. Join in the socials, it's what I'm doing and have met some amazing people whom I hope will become good friends. And I haven't boffed any of them.....yet

Not easy is it? I've been so consumed with work I had little time to devote to myself.

Google 'meet up', groups that meet with similar interests. There are usually a handful in your area.

Pole dancing. Worked for me - plus it makes for interesting conversations at the coffee bar!

It can be extremely difficult to make new friends the older you get. Clubs and social groups are the usual suggestion and they can be great, they can also be full of people who already know each other and are quite resistant to welcoming newcomers whatever they claim. One of the best ways if you have time is volunteering.

I did volunteer for a group but it was for under 35s

I had trouble with it, but by going to the UpTheBrum and Manchester Socials, I believe I have made some new proper friends (and not just fwbs).

The main thing is, get out there and find people with similar interests.

Good luck

Time to find a new group .

We moved a few years back and knew nobody in the area. We're friendly with a couple of neighbours but not friends with them iyswim. We joined a social club which was anything but social , there are a couple of other clubs we'll join when the current unpleasantness has passed but making new friends is not always easy, it often requires a fair bit of effort. Don't be discouraged, if one thing doesn't work try another, friendships can often form in unlikely places and with unlikely people

As already said above, download an app called Meetup. Within that there are numerous interests ranging from outdoor activities to book clubs and everything in between. You simply have to join one of the groups and turn up at the organised events.

You've even got the option of starting your own groups based on whatever your hobbies or interests are and others will join.

Oh, I didn't know it was an app, I just heard it mentioned on here in the past and googled it

Yes it's been going for years. I haven't been a member for about 3 years but there are events all over the country. Some of the groups charge a small fee of £10 to join for a year while others charge £1 each time you turn up. Many are completely free.

Wirral

The friends I've made in recent years have been through courses, activities and jobs.

I did a couple of evening classes and have a social group from them - one of the groups goes to the theatre and I've had some great nights out with them, the other tends to be coffee mornings that I attend when I can.

I did a rave fitness class and made a couple of friends there, we go out for drinks every few months.

Most of my social group is ex colleagues, because I've moved around quite a bit with work and in every job there are a couple of people I want to keep in touch with.

I find it very easy to make social mates, and in non-covid times I'm usually out more nights than I'm home. They aren't very close friendships though, I only have two of those and both were made at work. They're "fancy a coffee?" mates where it's just a social thing.

At 35 I’ve found the best way to make friends is to paint the garden fence. Every fucker from the neighbourhood comes out to speak. Granted it’s to ask if you’ll paint there’s too but I spoke to a lot of people that day

A hobby if you can. Hiking/running/cycling/riding group. Mens club? (although that seems to often be old men that sit in the pub all day!). Volunteer work - fire, search and rescue, stables, animal shelter, community work. Good luck op x

I do have meetup - just haven't seen anything I fancy yet. I don't really want to meet a group of people in a pub, I'd prefer an activity

In the 2 years I was on it I never met anyone in a pub. There were lots of walking groups and I even went rockpool fishing for shrimp.

I built up my social circle where I live now within the last few years. Once you’ve met a couple of people you might then get introduced to their mates and it snowballs.

As mentioned already the Meetup app is good. Also connected with someone from here who I recognised from a Meetup group. Tinder. The gym. It’s good to have a combination of things on the go

So I’m married with kids early 40s. I don’t work anymore and don’t meet people through kids as they get older. Had a nice friend group that fell apart as people moved, started jobs, split up etc.

I’m finding it so hard too. I think my biggest problem is finding people who want to do stuff. The friends I have just seem to want to stay at home with their kids, I love my family but want to do stuff with and without them!

All new friends welcome here
