"It can be extremely difficult to make new friends the older you get. Clubs and social groups are the usual suggestion and they can be great, they can also be full of people who already know each other and are quite resistant to welcoming newcomers whatever they claim. One of the best ways if you have time is volunteering." I did volunteer for a group but it was for under 35s

We're friendly with a couple of neighbours but not friends with them iyswim. We joined a social club which was anything but social , there are a couple of other clubs we'll join when the current unpleasantness has passed but making new friends is not always easy, it often requires a fair bit of effort. Don't be discouraged, if one thing doesn't work try another, friendships can often form in unlikely places and with unlikely people

"As already said above, download an app called Meetup. Within that there are numerous interests ranging from outdoor activities to book clubs and everything in between. You simply have to join one of the groups and turn up at the organised events. You've even got the option of starting your own groups based on whatever your hobbies or interests are and others will join." Oh, I didn't know it was an app, I just heard it mentioned on here in the past and googled it

I haven't been a member for about 3 years but there are events all over the country. Some of the groups charge a small fee of £10 to join for a year while others charge £1 each time you turn up. Many are completely free.

I don't really want to meet a group of people in a pub, I'd prefer an activity

There were lots of walking groups and I even went rockpool fishing for shrimp.

"So I’m married with kids early 40s. I don’t work anymore and don’t meet people through kids as they get older. Had a nice friend group that fell apart as people moved, started jobs, split up etc. I’m finding it so hard too. I think my biggest problem is finding people who want to do stuff. The friends I have just seem to want to stay at home with their kids, I love my family but want to do stuff with and without them! All new friends welcome here " If I was closer
