Normally, I don't really follow F1. But I'm interested today, because there is a British driver in a fight for a championship and it depends on this one race, so I'll watch it.

However, I get the impression that this sport isn't really about support for nationalities, rather teams and drivers? So to many (I guess) the nationality of the driver / team doesn't matter? I.e., a win for Hamilton isn't seen as a win for Britain over the Dutch / Flemish, like it would be perhaps in another sport.

Just interested really.

Lewis on strategy, max has shit tyres and a first pit stop window dropping him behind Bottas. He’ll either need to two stop or rely on some serious luck to overcome the 1 stop starting on the best tyre..

Hmm

You kinda just knew that there’d be some controversy in the final reckoning.

Fair play to Max and Red Bull, a title isn’t won over one lap. Twists and turns through 2022 have led to a slightly confusing situation at the end but they’ve earned it as much as Lewis and Mercedes would have done had they have been on the right end.

I think that was probably the right outcome for the season. Lewis and father showed class by congratulating Max.

The stewards have made a lot of “interesting “ decisions over the season and I think both sides have benefited and been penalised equally. For it to come down to literally a few metres over the entire season is entirely fitting.

Shocking race stewarding by Massi at the end. ALL lapped cars must be let through then the safety car comes in the following lap reg 39.12.

Casual observer of F1, tuned in today out of interest, most likely the last time I do, seems like a complete fix. Someone might have to explain, but Verstappen is 11 seconds down, then gets luxury of new tyres ( because he had nothing to lose so came in for them) and all of the cars that were in his way removed, whereas Hamilton had previously had to race around them. What exactly does Hamilton get to level all of this out?

Wow, a fascinating and contraversial end to the race. In my humble, the stewards got it completely wrong; not sure if they can back track and reverse the result as it would look ridiculous. Both drivers have been exceptional this season and it did not deserve to end like this; may be a sour victory for MV, but equally if the Mercedes appeal is sucessful not sure how LH will feel.

No harm to clarify to those making the decisions that they either abide by their own rules or if grey areas they have some sort of idea they can revert back to in their own rules..

I’m not a F1 fan at all (despite being a massive sports fan) . The sport just seems riddled with controversy and that just puts me right off. I remember the days of Prost, Senna etc . In those days things just seemed ‘cleaner’.

It’s a little bit like football for me. I find I am watching it less and less as nearly every game now has a big VAR decision or a big refereeing decision that has had a bearing on the result. We seem to hear more about that than the actual game. I found football much more enjoyable in the 80s / 90s. I have actually become a huge fan of watching womens football of late . Yes you can argue that the skill level may not be as high but it’s honest . No rolling around and cheating trying to get each other sent off. Now they just need to work on the competition levels. Scores of 7 or 8 nil are quite rife. Sorry OP . I digressed

Totally agree.. If they want a Hollywood finish make a Holywood movie. I've only watched the last 3 races and all of them have made stuff up as they go along to suit who shouts loudest. Short term gain maybe but doesn't do the sports credibility any good at all.

Good point, and what many of the Hamilton detractors who crticise his talent because he has a better car forget is that Verstappen effectively won the race because he had better tyres!

"I’m not a F1 fan at all (despite being a massive sports fan) . The sport just seems riddled with controversy and that just puts me right off. I remember the days of Prost, Senna etc . In those days things just seemed ‘cleaner’.

I think Suzuka in 1989 would suggest that it was certainly not “cleaner”."

I certainly take your point in board. Maybe it’s just me but in those days that was the exception to the rule IMO. Nowadays every other race is controversial. This season was a good case in point. Maybe it’s just the sheer amount of money being pumped into sport that it seeks to be win at all costs.

I feel there needs to be big rule changes over interaction between bosses and the race director ‘during’ a race. The lobbying, wheeling dealing has been a disgrace.

Leave the job of stewarding to the stewards. They tell the director if something is to be penalised. Not the director sending an incident up to the stewards for ‘investigation’. Leave the director to simply control the safety aspects of the Grand Prix, and apply and penalty’s as they’re awarded to drivers.

Completely agree, watched F1 for over 30 years avidly but the last few years have been boring as watching paint dry.

Put me in a Lamborghini and watch me race off at a set of traffic lights against a robin reliant, hardly call it a race or skillful.

Christian Horner said it how it was after last week's race, anyone can drive fast in a straight line but takes a skilled driver in the corners! This GOAT for Hamilton is a joke.

As the eagle eyed among you may have guessed by my username, I’m a big fan of motor sport in general.

I don’t get people getting all partisan though. It’s not football. What happened, happened and that’s motor racing.

It was an incredible twist at the end of an incredible season and just proves it’s not over until it’s over.

Reminds me of the #5 Toyota breaking down on the very last lap of the 2016 Le Mans 24 hours whilst comfortably leading and handing victory to Porsche.

It ain’t over until it’s over and motor racing is cruel but also brilliant all at the same time.

However they judge it they should apply the same technology, process and punishments if needed to all races through the season... Not just change the rules depending on who it is and who gets on the trumpet to the big cheese first.

I get what you mean about that le man… but everyone knew the rule is 24hrs plus 1 lap, and you have to complete that one lap!!!

In this situation they are basically acknowledging that the rules wasn’t applied properly, because if it has that race wouldn’t have restarted, but race director has power to change that rule…. Which then makes all the politicking seem really really unseemly…. As it look like red bull and Horner got massi to change his mind and then toto objected…

The whole safety car start procedure is the big one to untangle…..

Not as much as i noticed Hamilton having all 4 off the track on the first lap and gaining ground, having left the door wide open for Max, who was in front at the apex and had the racing line

Worse than he did in the Merc.

Count how many of Hamiltons overtakes are straight line DRS aided and there's very little skill involved. I'm not saying he's a bad driver just don't think he deserves the plaudits he gets, and as for getting a knighthood its a joke.

To be honest, the finish was a farce. It ruined the race entirely.

I personally think that safety cars destroy races anyway, but in this case the random decision to only allow the cars between Lewis and Max pass the safety car so that Max and Lewis could "race" (with Max's huge advantage) was blatantly the wrong thing to do.

Mercedes are right to be cross, but I don't see the result being changed.

Safety car rules should go back to the early 90s where the time you were ahead or the gap to the car behind was calculated and added to your time, stops the likes of dodgy going one like piquet jnr purposely crashing to aid Renault

Personally I think: if VSC isn't enough, then it should be a red-flag. Cars line up in the order they are in (including lapped cars) and when it's safe to race, they are released one at a time at the time intervals that were present when they stopped... and no working on the car or changing tyres.

I like this idea but what should actually happen is that the cars line up in race order and then depart at their alloted slots. The only reason you have lapped cars in the way is because the track is too small for a complete race and your idea would be a good way of unwinding that.

Turkish GP, 2020

Hamilton was in a class of his own, in heavy rain on slippery, recently re laid tarmac. Bottas in the same car finished 14th after many spins.

Verstappen and Albon in the Red Bulls were also nowhere, a distant 6th and 7th, in the admittedly tricky RB16.

It was an utter masterclass and probably the best drive Hamilton has had in his career.

Not very skillful? Hardly.

Again I don’t get why people get so partisan. That’s not motor racing. When you see something really special/memorable like that unfold just enjoy it.

Today’s race will be talked about in 20 years easily.

I have lost a lot of respect for Micheal Masi this year tbh.

The decisions he has made this year have at times seemed completely random. The negations for re start grid positions in Saudi were an utter joke for example.

Shame as he took no prisoners when he was race director in V8 Supercars and kept a few big Aussie personalities in check.

So a race on a circuit that purely got the last race rights due to money, was ruined by a driver crashing that only got his place on the grid due to money, which has caused money money money money.

And ironically the biggest loser is the guy who has fought up from a non money background.

"this is the problem when a sport is sold to an entertainment company, the sport side of things goes out the window, its all about viewers etc, and it seems to has worked as look we are talking about it, do i think what happened was rigged, absolutly, but i think Massy was a pown in all this, and im sure he wont be around next year, its a shame, as ive worked in motor racing all my life, and never seen anything like it, but if thats what the public whant etc"

I don’t buy the suggestion that this was staged in any way or that the media company that own f1 are enjoying this in any way. All of the publicity is negative, with lots of people saying it is a joke and that they won’t watch f1 any more.

"So a race on a circuit that purely got the last race rights due to money, was ruined by a driver crashing that only got his place on the grid due to money, which has caused money money money money.

And ironically the biggest loser is the guy who has fought up from a non money background.

Money. "

If you dont think Max can drive a car you are mad

There is a reason hes one of the best drivers in IRacing aswell

And Hamiltons family is certainly not poor plus having all his karting paid for by Mclaren

His answer you replied to has no mention of race in it. Where does your comment come from.

Gravesend

I enjoyed the spectacle...just as I enjoyed the sailing at the beginning of the year...but. I certainly wouldn't waste my money on a pay per view Event...watching a bunch of rich kids playing with their fabulously expensive toys and spitting their dummies if they don't get their own way

Another thread on Hamilton a few days ago where they were spreading unfounded hate towards him and the fact he drove a German car (even though the team are based in the UK, but anyway).

Terra Firma

Great season, loved the drama, I enjoyed the CH4 coverage too. Icing on the cake would have been a Hamilton win.

Next season is going to be great with Russell in the team, that is going to be a spectacle for sure!

Finally, I can't wait for the Netflix F1 documentary to hit the screens.

It has been a season to remember

I’ve heard that Red Bull’s 2022 car will be fuelled by Hamilton fan’s tears.

There’s enough to keep Max’s and Checo’s cars going for seasons to come.

"Personally I think: if VSC isn't enough, then it should be a red-flag. Cars line up in the order they are in (including lapped cars) and when it's safe to race, they are released one at a time at the time intervals that were present when they stopped... and no working on the car or changing tyres.

Cal

I like this idea but what should actually happen is that the cars line up in race order and then depart at their alloted slots. The only reason you have lapped cars in the way is because the track is too small for a complete race and your idea would be a good way of unwinding that. "

But then, the cars behind would have the advantage of not having to pass back markers that others needed to. Nobody should get any advantage from a stoppage

i dont see a driver on the grid who hasnt come from a well off family, if your talking about Hamalton, well i know the family, and did before his rise as a star, they werent poor

Have you messaged them? They must be fuming/devastated "

think they have enough on thier plate now, altho do have lewis number and antonys
