Good music, good vocals, good lyrics...

If you could only pick 2 of the above to make a good song what would you choose?

Good music and vocals for me. Unless the lyrics are offensive, they could be gibberish as long as the tune and vocals are good

Most song lyrics these days are gibberish if you read them on a webpage. Good music I think is the most important, followed by "appropriate" vocals. They don't have to be a good singer, just right for the song. I hold up Shane McGowan as an example.

Music and lyrics I think.

For example the singers from The XX are hardly the best vocalists but the music is beautiful and their voices suit it.

Music and vocals. Lyrically, everything has been kind of covered 100 times over. Adele would be an example, singing about heartbreak again and again and again and again

Neither. It’s about the attitude, the chord structure and the arrangement

Music & vocals as a former pro musician the lyrics don’t have to be the best in the world but a great tune and great delivery make all the difference

I like Snow Patrol, to me their music is good and so is the vocals but the lyrics are utter gash.

Good music definitely, but im torn between vocals and lyrics. You dont need to have good vocals to sound good with certain types of music, though it kinda depends on what you consider to be "good vocals". But at the same time lyrics can be very vague and open to interpretation and how the listener relates to them, and the composition of the music itself, so it doesnt need to be an extremely well written song to have good lyrics.

If i had to really choose, id say good music and good vocals maybe

You mean that you don’t like that anti mask song that has an awful tune and vocals, but has a poignant message about keeping farts in your pants?

I think it's music and lyrics for me. I love a good protest song and Billy Bragg et all don't have the most melodic of voices.

Lyrics and a good tune is what you need. Good vocals are subjective depending on who's listening to it.

abruzzo Italy (and UK)

I guess that of the three, the lyrics are the ones that can be lost and still make a great song, the Cocteau twins spring to mind.

Good music and vocals. A winning example of this is Lisa Gerrard - Now we are free (Gladiator soundtrack).

She uses a made up language to sing in, but the song is still beautiful.
