Do you see Christmas as being about Jesus, or Santa or both?

Jump to newest

When I was growing up it was all about the birth of Jesus and the nativity. It seems these days it’s all about Santa / Father Christmas.

What do you associate Christmas with more? The religious side or the commercial side or can you have a happy medium between them both?

I don't like how Christmas has become so commercialised and materialistic, that families are put under pressure to blow the budget to the point of taking out expensive pay day loans to cover it all.

I'd rather keep it about Jesus and use it as a time of year to consider those less fortunate or in need.

I must admit that until two years ago when pandemic hit, for me Santa's sleigh was a TUI jet heading for one or other of the Canary islands, pina colada at a pool side with waiters running round in Santa hats, and a tan top up into the bargain, not to mention gala dinner, was what made a year of graft all worthwhile.

Those days will hopefully return though.

I love the commercialisation of it, that it's been snatched from the clutches of organised religious control freaks. People took it and made it their own.

Beautiful freedom. Authoritarian institutions hate that

For the record, I’m not a grinch, and I’m happy for those who love this time of year. I won’t be miserable among people if I’m invited to visit. It’s just a big old kerfuffle for me.

Funny you should mention that it's a pagan festival, which I dare say is open to debate, but I did read an article about pagan festivals, including Christmas being celebrated around mid winter. The reason given was that we homosapians are basically animals, albeit the most ad animals on the planet, and human male of our species is at his most potent, and sexually active around mid winter day. It's effectively the height of the mating season for us lot, hence the rituals and festivals round about now. You however may know more on this subject than I do.

Its a pretty poor debate when the Pagans had a winter solstice celebrating the coming of longer days- or the 'birth of the sun', and also celebrated the spring equinox- the time of 'rebirth' (Hmmmm, lets rebrand it as Easter?)- then this other lot turned up and conveniently had a story fitted in with both (just wiggle some dates round a little to suit). All you had to do was do as we say and give us some of your money/crops/livestock so we don't have to graft for it

I thought that "Santa Claus" was a corruption of "Saint Nicolas". It appears to have started from Sinter Klaas, a shortened form of Sint Nikolaas (Dutch for Saint Nicholas).

The nativity features high in my life, partly because I'm a Christian (i have no idea how i am a Christian swinger ) but also one of my grandchildren goes to a village church school, throughout the year they have various Christian events, the certificates the children get always have a quote from the bible and this week they have a nativity concert on
