Not just a....

Saw this post and it sums up everything about my profession and hits so close to home...

“Just a nurse/carer” they say. This is the reality of working in nursing/care home....

We don’t just “wipe backsides” or “make cups of tea all day” or even sit around all day chatting to one another…we have a duty of care. We pick out a outfit every morning , wash, dress and comb their hair. We reassure them when they’re having a frustrating day, we sing, we dance, we kiss your loved one on the forehead goodnight and tell them we love them every night when putting them to bed, we create and grow bonds like never before. They’re more then just a resident, they’re our family. We’re left heartbroken when a resident passes and are still expected to carry on with our work, stay professional and on to the next resident. Last night I came home and broken down like never before and all I see on social media is “they’re just a nurse/carer” well I’m “just a nurse/carer” and it’s the hardest yet most rewarding job there ever has been and I wouldn’t change my job for the world. I’ll hold the memories created with each resident that comes and goes forever

Not many people whose loved ones are cared for by carers *ever* refers to "just" a carer.

We might sometimes mention a problem or point out where in our opinion care could be different or improved but most of us appreciate how difficult the job is.

Trust me, we point out the same things that family members do as we experience these things daily and we wish for those improvements.

Just a carer???? Not a job I could ever do, the emotions and hard work they do, the long hours and the total disrespect they get as just carers! They have my utmost respect as do something that most won't do.

I wish that carers were paid more, had better working conditions, had longer to spend with each client and were given as much respect as other front line jobs.

I've had a number of relatives pass through the care system (All St. Johns)and most of the care staff were great. I couldn't do it..

I can't speak more highly for the people who cared for my dad, they made by his final days comfortable, they smiled when he had a tantrum, they showed such love and care.

They deserve all the recognition they should get

Thank you all.

I have been referred to as “the carer”, “the student” and “nurse”. Mostly they’re just harmless terms, but sometimes you think “ya know, I have a name, fucking use it!”

But yeah, I have referred to my self as all those terms as well. It is not just what I do it’s who I am too I guess.

Anyway I’m rambling. Praise to all my colleagues in the care sector

I think the work carers do is hugely undervalued. You need a big heart, compassion and a lot of patience amongst many qualities. It's also a very physical job too. Massive respect to you.xx

Iv got 2 sisters who work in care profession .but it wasn't till my mom went into a care home I saw just how hard a job carer's do .my mom ad 12 months in there b4 she passed ..u all deserve more pay more staff more appreciation .u are all so so more than carers .u all av my total unmost respect x

You are not 'just' anyone....you are there when people are going through the roughest trauma, you see it and you help people through it day in and day out with constant reassuring.

I thank you for that. Nurses and carers are the backbone of our country

I’m sure plenty of them with think it’s absolutely charming. Personally I think that sounds very sweet

My mum was in a care home for three years before she died earlier this year. I would never say that anybody who looked after her "just a carer". I think they do a job a lot of people would be very hesitant about doing because of how demanding it is. I think it is terrible how undervalued they are, including financially.

I have given thought to becoming a carer myself because of what an important job it is but unfortunately the pay cut I would take would hit me too hard with my current commitments. Luke
