The 5:2 diet

Hi all

I try to look after myself & I'm not particularly overweight but think ideally I could do with loosing about half a stone.

Has anyone ever tried the 5:2 diet?

This involves eating normally for 5 days per week then having only 600 calories on the other 2 days (fasting). There has been all sort of research saying that this can make you loose weight rapidly & also 'repairs' all your internal organs.

Has anyone had any success with this?

I saw the Horizon programme on it, which was very interesting.

Yes I've had a go and know others who have too. Seems to work really well as you're not starving forever. There's 'light at the end of the tunnel' as it were, with the eating days to look forward to. The Horizon programme was good.

I'm going to start it again next week actually.

Essex.

I was led to believe that if you starve the body the first thing you lose is muscle not fat. The simplest way is to eat a bit less and exercise a bit more... By adding muscle you'll burn more fat... Fat is also lighter than muscle so a fat person will weigh less than a muscly one... Hope this helps... And no I don't follow my own advice...lol

I saw one of my male friends last weekend and he has lost a considerable amount of belly fat following this regime. He also said that generally his appetite seems to have reduced.

I've read otherwise, and that regular weight training whilst fasting is one of the best ways you can rapidly lose fat whilst maintaining muscle - theres a good website called 'leangains' which does a good job of covering the practice of fasting whilst training for anyone who's interested.

I'll have to check it out. I've just started with weights after a few years off...

It's not rocket science. The 5.2 plan would undoutedly work if you need a quick fix but unless you make longterm changes like all fad diets the weight will just come back on.

Plenty of veg, garlic and onions

You should lose about half a stone to a stone.

Also a possibility you could lose a few friends too
