Pet insurance

We all know how expensive but necessary evil it can be. My dog developed some joint problems, so I'm thinking now new insurers would insure this as it's pre existing condition.

I am thinking of renewing with the existing insurer just take out a better premium, do you think this will work if he needs operating on in the future??

It's a shame you weren't closer, I do therapy, however you can give your pooch cod liver oil, we give our old girl one capsule a day

Following this with interest. My dog 9 years old now and luckily never needed a vet.

Been with the same insurance company from day one and now premium is £45 a month. Do I look for a better quote?? Will I get the same level of cover now she is older??

It's good stuff, I will be performing photon therapy to our old girl soon, she's just started showing signs of old age, she's 15 in March

I think that if you are going to have pets over a long period of time it's best to put the equivalent of the cost of insurance in a savings account every month. Insurance companies are well known for having "conditions" and "exceptions" and over the course of 40 years of pet owning we have never spent an equivalent amount on vets bills that insurance premiums would have cost

Pre existing conditions are usually excluded if you move to a new insurer or you have to pay extra for the cover. If your current cover is for say £2k then you probably need to increase it (or look around) to at least £5k, though it depends what the joint issues or your intentions are. By the age of 8-9 insurance usually sky rockets as they are seen as senior.

Sometimes hydrotherapy is included in policies so it's worth checking it, though finding decent places is hard to come by.

This is exactly what I was looking at doing the hydro therapy is a brilliant idea

For dogs with joint issues... Firstly go to the vet to ensure its nothing that requires surgery.

I give dog 1 devil's claw supplement and one Yumove tablet after breakfast. Then one more Yumove after her dinner.

Devil's claw is brilliant for quite bad stiff joints and or limping dogs.

You can try green lipped mussel too but not together with a devil's claw supplement.

Both can be added to your dogs food. Or twist open the capsules and tip the contents on top of your dogs tongue. This is how I administer to my dogs because they don't always finish their food.

You can buy green lipped mussel supplements on eBay or Amazon. Ensure you buy the ones which are 500mg though! That's important.

Yumove can be pricey but they do work and they're cheaper then meds from a vet. You can shop around for discount codes. Or join their mailing lists as I do. They email you big discount codes quite regularly.

Mine have been on the above and no longer limps nor in any pain. Best of luck

Pet insurance is a waste of money just put £50 side each month a lot insurance will not pay out for older dogs u wasted all the money u have put in

I have 2 dogs...one has never needed vets...the other developed joint problem. Needed surgery to both rear legs.. cost 7500...only had 1000 cover...

It's a gamble if you don't take out insurance. For peace of mind, best to take out insurance

Hi. Would you mind me asking how you paid for the rest? Considering the insurance had a short fall. I have 3 dogs and one may need the same as yours but my insurance cover may be short too.

They are worthwhile but as others have said there are few trained or those with proper facilities. Most just have swimming pools rather than tanks with treadmills. They ideally should assess and up/decrease resistance, walking them through 5, 10, 20cm of water as they get fitter.

There are a lot of physio exercises you can do to strengthen alongside hydro too

Insurance for my dog started at around £23pm and by the time he very sadly passed away was just over £100 but well worth it as would have paid £££ on vet fees for a number of operations, on going medication and treatments, including alternative therapies such as hydro and massage. Always good to take good insurance as soon as you get a puppy. Some come with insurance already but often not of a good cover for later on. Mine I think was for £6k or something like that. Still miss him though and would have paid anything to have him around

11yo JRT for context, he's had both cruciates done and with the tablets he's currently like a puppy

Green lipped mussel is in Yumove yes. But topping up with a separate Green lipped mussel capsule, really makes such a difference.

If your dog isn't that bad, then just stick to either or option.

I've never tried yumove, as I've only ever given single supplements. With GLM, 500mg is recommended up to 20kg (from memory). It comes as a capsule that you mix/sprinkle over food, or can take yourself.

There's lots of manufactures but the ones in the UK have to farm it .. GLM is a New Zealand product and as a result, better. Riaflex do NZ ones, I use Troo (I was using NZ glm and can't remember why I changed, it may have been the cost at the time) but for the year - it's a very cheap supplement.

I've seen comments saying it makes them drink/pee a little more though I've not noticed it.

Pet insurance can b a minefield but v much needed .my ex 2 dogs av bin insured since they were puppies they are expensive policies but av ad our money worth out of it x

Never bothered with insurance. Just put 100 a month away minimum . Been fairly lucky with our dog's . currently only 2 Great Danes but have had 4 in total .vet's bills are usually double the cost of other dog's but totally worth every penny.
