You know... that thing females have started doing that makes words sound 'mardy' (if you dont know what it is please youtube).

Does anyone do it here? Why is it done? It sounds daft please stop it

It's a bit difficult to describe in words because it's a sound. Think of somebody talking but not pushing enough air over your vocal chords. Instead of getting a smooth sound out you get a kind of crackly noise.

That's the best I can think of to explain it. Im sure YouTube will have some examples if you need one.

Vocal fry is a singing technique particularly common in metal for producing gutturals or fry screams. It's a diaphragmatic technique that doesn't engage the vocal folds.

No idea why someone would add fry to their day to day speaking voice though.
