Must be the most evil case of abuse I have ever read in the news. I know here is maybe not a great place to discuss such crimes.

But I hope you can also spare a minute or two to remember Arthur Labinjo-Hughes, aged 6.

Nothing we can do now as he’s gone. But as the year progresses let’s promise we will aim to never fail our children again.

You’re at peace now little man. I’m so sorry you didn’t know what love was. My heart breaks for you. May you rest in eternal peace.

Stories like this make me so proud of my sister who is a foster carer for children like him she shows them what love is protects them and nurtures them before they’re adopted into loving homes.

The system fucked up and a serious inquest is needed.

I just hope he’s having the most amazing time in heaven free of pain.

Not even that. He told his teachers he thought his dad would kill him. He was malnourished no one picked it up. There’s a huge systematic failing. He was seen and heard on cctv sobbing saying no body loves me. No child should ever feel that. Lessons need to be learned. Big time.

This broke me, I have seen and studied some vile stuff during the course of my career but this broke me....I just cannot comprehend this. And the female is or was pregnant???. Like wtf! I hope both sub humans rot for a very long time

His dad had researched a certain hold on the neck as punishment - that police in America use

- on a six year old defenceless child??!!

I know. His birth mum is in prison for murder. That whole family should never have been allowed procreate.

As someone who can’t have children. Who so desperately wants them. This breaks me on a deeper level. I would do anything to have a child and how they can treat one like this resulting in his painful slow death is beyond me. In a way it’s a blessing as he’s no longer suffering but I’d have loved to give him the love he so desperately wanted.

Let them have done to them what they did to him. An eye for an eye. Punish them with starvation poision neglect abuse. See how they like it. I bloody hope prison justice is served because no doubt they’ll get a lenient sentence

I've not listened to the details through choice but get the gist. Sadly this proves social care for kids has not moved on since I was a child and I'm now 58, I had been highlighted as vulnerable and even had regular visits and chats with a visitor from the NSPCC, he told me on a regular basis that there was nothing he could do to help until there was a serious incident, within a year or so I was collected from hospital by my estranged father and gladly never had to return to live with my alcoholic mother , I was lucky I suppose, I survived, many don't, the world is very broken in this respect, so sad.

I can’t bring myself to watch it. I have read it and that was enough for me.

The jury at the court were allowed to stand and give a moments silence in respect of him bless them and they have been spared from ever serving on jury again. I expect they’ll need therapy after sitting through that. I know I would.

I followed this and it broke my heart.i don't cry much, and keep my emotions in check. But the video of that poy boy limping with no strength to lift a duvet and pillow and crying that no one loved him or would feed him has made me cry and I cannot get it out if my head or heart. He asked for help for a year and was failed by everyone.

How that an got off on murder I don't know. But I hope they both suffer in jail

Hearing the audio recording and seeing the video was utterly heartbreaking. Why are the lessons still not being learned time and again? Arthur’s voice should have been heard before this happened and someone should have been there to take action to help him. Now it’s too late. Again.

That's what breaks my heart the most. Even the police threatened to arrest the grandparents for raising concerns.

I flowed and saw the video though it was the hardest thing to do.

I felt I owed Arthur that. No child shoukd feel like or die like that. I have felt sadness and find tears in my eyes for the last two weeks. Sadly until people who's job it is stRt doing their jobs and rock the boat this will happen again and again

A few weeks ago I went to see if my uncle’s gravestone had been erected. It hadn’t but next to where he lay was a a patch of grass. At the side was a scatter of stone and an upturned flower pot. “We miss the patter of your tiny feet” was written on it. Not old nor very recent. A child death possibly forgotten? Parents moved on? That moved me too.

Too many cut backs from central Govt which means cases like this are getting missed.

No doubt there will be some kind of enquiry as always.

I read about the case along with my colleague last week. Neither of us could comprehend it at all. It's just abominable, shocking and disgusting that any people could do such things to any child, let alone a father to his own child. Why was he left in the care of these wicked people, with all that was known and reported? He obviously had grandparents who knew something was wrong - could then not have had care rights? Were school staff reporting the fuck out of every comment, every mark/bruise? Reporting his changing body composition? Where the fuck were social services? Why wasn't he removed from that place? Even the hairdresser noticed something was awry but didn't report anything. This is why we ALL have a collective responsibility in society. So SO many failings on so many levels that I don't even know where to begin.

I cannot fathom the suffering of that poor little boy. Just horrific

Any agency who saw that boy but did not see a problem are evidently deluded and a school must have been involved at some stage because I read that staff were called to give evidence. I agree that the lockdown will have brought things more behind closed doors but it seems the abuse was happening outside of lockdowns too.

Totally agree and yes that's my point the school and other agencies were involved but then lockdown happened and he basically just got abandoned and left to those people.

I have, but still the decision is with the police first, then social services if the police think they should be informed.

I worked child abuse cases in the early 90's. Social Services are the lead agency, and they prioritise keeping the family together regardless and 'working through their problems'. They were totally blind to the realities of some situations and wouldn't support removing a child or prosecution even where there was clear abuse. Only once did I invoke police powers to remove a child from it's parents, and they returned him. I refused to work child abuse cases after that. LEA were equally useless. They just sit back and wait for child to reach school leaving age and then it's no longer their problem. Looks like things haven't changed much.

The video was heartbreaking of him on the news! I cried! It's everyone's responsibility however without going too far into it- not enough staff, too many cases, overlooked, not enough communication across services, not my responsibility culture, professional curiosity of different services not pulles together and looked at the bigger picture. It will happen again, lessons won't be learned - has lesson been learnt from winterbourne. All humans aren't nice and kind- we can't change that- therefore this will continue. RIP little man. You were a true star

I was on my way to pick up my kids yesterday when it came on the news, I had to turn the radio off. When I got the eldest (just turned 7) I gave him such a squeeze he thought I was a bit weird.

Disgusting isnt it, i read about it yesterday and brought me to tears.

There are so so many people that would give anything for the ability to have a child inc myself and you get people like these that just abuse parenthood putting a defenseless child through that amount of abuse, its sickening. We really need the death penalty in this country.

But that’s the thing - his grandparents did by the sound of it but they weren’t taken seriously.

There’ll be more reviews - maybe a resignation to keep people happy - but absolutely fucking nothing will change - and next year we’ll be reading about another child - this one a distant memory.

Frankly, unless we massively change a system that clearly doesn’t work, we’ll be discussing cases like this once or twice a year.

The only people - besides the poor boy - that I have pity for is the grandparents - if I were them I’d be mentally torturing myself daily for not absconding with him to save his life!

Apparently he was taken to a hairdressers house the day before he died and her and her husband witnessed Arthur being verbally abused! And you cannot tell me that Neighbours didn't see or hear anything looking at the position of the house.

I mean, you see it you call it. Safegaurding is everyone's business....Anyone who knew or saw are just as guilty in my eyes.

I believe the hairdresser’s bf snuck Arthur a glass of water which seems to have been the only kind thing that happened to him during those months of terror.

It was like he was handed into a terrifying captivity. But these things are still happening so I urge everyone to take more notice of any unhappy looking kids.

My partner is a social worker so I can state that abuse happens across all levels of society.

I read that too! Why sneak the water? Why not have the balls to say that you are giving the child a drink. It just seems failure after failure of adults at every level

Yes. They gloated over it. They really were the very worst monsters.

Bizarrely she had two of her own living there in relative comfort. Plenty of beds but Arthur had to sleep on the living room floor. They ate ice creams as he starved standing in the hallway dressed in a onesie in a heatwave poisoned by salt and dying of thirst.

They showed no remorse.

I expect a lot of people are hanging their heads in shame though I think the glass of water was nothing to be ashamed of. We don’t know how much he knew of the family.

The tragedy for all of us is we cannot reach back and save him. How many of us look into others lives? I still feel guilty over not reporting a terrified girl walking along a high street being bothered by a creep on a bike with a dog. I suspected a domestic yet did nothing.

Seen and heard many cases through my job but this one sticks for so many reasons. Wonder how many more young people out there are being neglected and abused due to systematic failings. He told his teachers he thought his dad would kill him. Social workers had been after reports from family members. He was malnourished no one picked it up. He was seen and heard on cctv sobbing saying no body loves me. No child should ever feel that. Lessons need to be learned. Big time.

I've been around for a good few years and seen and heard a lot. From Brady and Hindley, through the Wests to the guy who torched his house with the kids inside.

Over time you think that you have become semi immune to reading these stories.

Then this comes along.

Like others have posted I really couldn't read the whole story it was just far too harrowing to go on.

I can't even look at a photo of the little boy without getting a lump in my throat, and the "nobody loves me" video, well I just can't find the words.

No doubt the blame game will run and run and the usual lessons will (not) be learned.

However let's not forget that it was two monsters who committed this despicable act. Two monsters who will go down in the annals of British crime as two of the worst, and I really hope that the attorney general finds a way to increase their sentences.

I watched yesterday the video and read this horrendous crime , is heartbreaking! Listening his words of pain, watching him walking in that room, i can't take that images from my head!

Stepmother having her childrens in comfort and litle Arthur fighting for his life is so cruel and brutal , everything happening with support of his dad !

I myself at the age of 5 years old i had a stepmother and i was locked in a shed permanently all day till night, when she or her sons would open the door to me to go sleep in the house! All day with only breakfast that was i bread wit butter and one cup of milk , and in the evening the dinner ! My dad didn't care at all for him she and her sons were his new family! Even bath was given to me with the dirty water of washing the dishes, was so hard in winter washing my bed sheets with cold water and soap , because she refused to wash them , in her eyes was the only way to make me stop wee in the bed,my clothes where the ones that her sons have used and broken etc etc ... i had the lucky that neighbours they noticed something wrong was happening and they contacted the police and the social services! After more than a year in that hell i was taken away to an orphanage where i will be forever grateful to the ones who they have contacted the authorities. When i tell people i went to an orphanage at the age of 6 they always say they feel sorry but i always tell then , don't say sorry because i had a beautiful childhood in that orphanage, without tell them the reason i went there because that memories they hurt!

It breaks my heart knowing Arthur didn't had any help , listening and watching this litle Angel so fragil , in pain walking in that room...i would give my life away right now if that could bring Arthur back
